January 02, 2002 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER- David Harrison scored a career-high 22 points as Colorado defeated St. Mary's, 68-51, Wednesday night at the Coors Events/Conference Center.
Harrison recorded 20 points in the second half and grabbed eight rebounds helping the Buffs remain unbeaten at home (8-0). Stephane Pelle scored 10 and James Wright added 11 as Colorado (8-2) won its fifth straight.
Early in the day, Harrison garnered Colorado's first individual honor of the 2001-02 season by being named Phillips 66 Big 12 Rookie of the Week. The 7'0" newcomer from Nashville, Tenn., registered his first double-double of his career by scoring a then-career-best 20 points and 10 rebounds in CU's win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee last Sunday, Dec. 30. It was the Buffs first game in almost three weeks.
Against St. Mary's, Colorado shot 46 percent from the field (31-for69), while the Gaels (5-7) shot 32 percent (25-for-62).
Paul Marigney scored 15 off the bench for St. Mary's, while teammate Ethnie Stubbs added a game-high 10 rebounds.
"We still haven't found our groove yet and I thought before we had our 17-day layoff we were starting to play a lot better and get a feel for one another," said CU head coach Ricardo Patton. "We just have to continue to play and get that under our belt."
St. Mary's stayed within seven points of Colorado during the first half and trailed 35-31 at the break.
Colorado took the lead for good on an 8-3 run with 10:10 left in the game.
The Buffs continue its longest homestand of the season and begin conference play this Saturday, Jan. 5 when nationally ranked Kansas (11-1, 0-0 Big 12) visits Boulder for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
