LINCOLN, Neb. - Colorado's school record unbeaten streak was snapped at six games as the Buffs dropped their final match of the regular season, 4-0, at Nebraska here tonight and will assume the role of the No. 5 seed at next week's Big 12 Tournament.
With the loss, Colorado falls to 9-5-2 overall, 4-4-2 in Big 12 play while the Huskers improve to 11-5-3/6-3-1 at the conclusion of conference play. In the final night of regular season play, fifth-ranked Texas A&M upset third-ranked, and previously unbeaten in Big 12 play Texas, 2-1, to come from behind in the points column and win the Big 12 regular season crown. In other games affecting the Tournament bracket, Missouri held off Kansas 2-0, Oklahoma State earned a trip to the postseason with a 3-2 win over Oklahoma.
"We had a heck of a run, but ran into a hungry and determined Nebraska team tonight," said head coach Bill Hempen. "News of them being down this year was highly exaggerated. We got caught in a similar game to last year. We'd try and play the ball, they'd steal it and kick it."
Nebraska's Nikki Baker began the first-half scoring attack in the 25th minute, putting the ball in the net from the top of the box. Christine Latham scored her 10th goal of the season in the 32nd minute. Brooke Bredenberg threw the ball in to Kori Saunders who crossed the ball to Latham and launched a solid shot into the net.
Sending the Huskers to the locker room with a 3-0 lead, sophomore Iman Haynes took a Jenna Cooper pass and made a play around the Colorado goalkeeper Sara Erskine and placed the ball in the left corner of the net.
Saunders would put in the final goal of the contest with 28 minutes remaining in the game. Freshman Kari Hogan fed Saunders the ball on a corner kick and she headed the ball into the net for the score.
Nebraska dominated the offensive side of the field, getting off 29 shots to Colorado's 14. Eleven of the Huskers' shots were on goal compared to only six of the Buffs'. NU also led Colorado in corner kicks, 11-3.
"We have to be stronger on crosses those were their most dangerous chances," explained Hempen on CU's weakness tonight. "We allowed them deeper and deeper into the box. They kept backing in and backing in. We need to have more of a presence in the penalty box.
As the No. 5 seed, the Buffs will open the Big 12 Tournament Thursday, Nov. 7 against Missouri (11-6-2/5-4-1), the tournament's No.4 seed in a 12:30 (MDT) kickoff. The winner will face the winner of the Texas A&M /Oklahoma State game Friday at 4 p.m.
