Gerlach Gets 1,000th Kill In Loss
November 12, 2002 | Volleyball
The University of Colorado volleyball team (13-13, 7-9 Big 12) fell to the Missouri Tigers (21-6, 10-5 Big 12) 30-25, 18-30, 23-30, 16-30 at the Hearns Center to suffer their second loss to the Tigers this season and end their two-match winning streak.
"Tonight was a disappointing loss for us," said Colorado head coach Pi'i Aiu. "We played well in game one, but we just weren't able to maintain that high energy throughout the match. Missouri is a tough team, but I think we really helped to beat ourselves tonight."
Junior middle blocker Monique Gerlach became the fourth Buffalo in CU volleyball history to reach the 1,000 career kill mark by the end of her junior season, as she tallied 13 kills in the match. Gerlach ties with Sarah Lodge as the fastest to reach the milestone, as both did so in their 77th match in a CU uniform. The Monarch Beach, Calif., native has hit in double-figures in 21 of 26 contests so far this season. She recorded her fourth double-double of the season against the Tigers as she snagged 10 digs for the Buffs.
Senior middle blocker Meghan Barkman paced Colorado with 15 kills in the match as she hit .243 with seven digs and three blocks on the night. Freshman right side Maragda Santillana also hit in double-figures for the Buffs as she pocketed 12 kills and four blocks.
Christi Myers had 22 kills for the Tigers while Mary Lauren Smith had 17 and Shen Danru finished with 13. Missouri hit .391 as a team with eight total blocks while Colorado slated a .266 hitting percentage with nine blocks as a team.
The Buffs have a bye Saturday and will return to action Wednesday, Nov. 20 when they host Texas Tech at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events/Conference Center in Boulder before they venture out to face Oklahoma in Norman on Nov. 23 at 6 p.m.
