University of Colorado volleyball senior co-captains Elizabeth Gower and Kim Taskey are in the running to receive Academic All-American honors as they have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District VII Volleyball First Team.
"Both Elizabeth and Kim work extremely hard on the court and in the classroom," Colorado head coach Pi'i Aiu said. "They are both very dedicated to their studies and excellent at managing their time. We are confident that great things lie ahead for both individuals, no matter what they decide to do after graduation. It has been wonderful having them both around, and they have certainly been role models for the rest of the team."
Gower, a setter from Naperville, Ill., boasts a team-high 3.94 cumulative grade point average in Chemical Engineering. Gower earned the highest GPA for her class in Chemical Engineering, generally regarded as both one of the top schools both on CU's campus and in the nation, following her sophomore and junior years. Gower has concluded two semesters with a perfect 4.0, and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor roll all six semesters she has been at CU. She was named to the CoSida Academic All-District Second-Team in 2000 as a sophomore and was CU's top academic recruit her freshman year.
Gower is currently fourth all-time on the Colorado setting charts with 3,784 career assists. She leads the pack with 10 career triple-doubles, and she has started every possible match since she's been at CU (115). In 2002, Gower is averaging 10.06 assists per game, 1.55 kills per game, and 2.28 kills per game, as she is hitting .209 on the year.
Taskey, a Portage, Mich., native, boasts an impressive 3.90 overall grade point average in Marketing. She has made the Big 12 Conference's Commissioner's Honor roll each of her six semesters in Boulder while she has recorded a perfect 4.0 twice in her collegiate career. The left side hitter was an Academic All-Big 12 First Team Selection in 2000 and 2001 and she received the McAllister Scholar Award in 2000 as well.
Taskey is currently leading the Buffs with 287 digs on the year as she averages 3.02 per game. She averages 2.26 kills per game on the left side.
Colorado's two Academic All-District First Team awards in 2002 match the number of identical awards the Buffaloes have received in their entire history. Jennifer Sherlock was named Academic All-District in 1990 and Kelly Campbell was named All-District and All-American in 1999. Gower earned second-team honors in 2000.
Making the All-District teams quailfies both players for Academic All-America, which will be selected later this fall. Campbell is the only player to earn Academic All-America honors for the Buffs.
