MBB Rides Harrison's Record To Win

November 23, 2002 | Men's Basketball

BOULDER - Sophomore center David Harrison became the second CU men's basketball player to record a triple-double (Chauncey Billups in 1995) as the Buffs rolled to a 107-74 victory over Stetson at the Coors Events Center on Sunday night.

"He did what he was supposed to do," head coach Ricardo Patton said. "Stetson had match-up problems inside. I want to guys to play well regardless of their opponents and that's what David did. It was easy for David to block in high school because he played in the smallest division in Tennessee. He didn't do a good job blocking last year, but now he is quicker to the ball because of his conditioning."

Harrison turned in a 31 points (13-of-17), shattered the school-record with 10 blocked shots and added 17 rebounds while senior forward Stephane Pelle recorded a double-double (15 points, 21 boards). His 21 rebounds was a career high, breaking his previous high of 18 set at Missouri on Jan. 19, 2002, and ties for the eighth-most rebounds in a game in CU history. Harrison's blocks tops the school's previous record of seven, from Ted Allen in 1993 and Joe Cooper in 1980.

"I want to play like this all the time," Pelle said. "The numbers show and the teams will want to stop us (Harrison and Pelle)."

Two other Buffs finished the game in double figures with Michel Morandais turning in 21 points and Blair Wilson adding 15, including four three-pointers. Freshman point guard Antoine McGee finished with a game-high 10 assists.

Colorado let the Hatters stick around for the better part of the first half before pulling away with two minutes remaining. Coming out in the second frame with a 45-29 lead, the Buffs blew the game wide open expanding their lead to the final margin of 33.

"We had a shaky start but a good ending," Patton said. "Twenty-six turnovers is far too many. The guys that didn't play a lot have to do a better job of controlling the gall. We need to do a much better job of taking care of the basketball."

The Hatters had four players hit double digits. Guard E.J. Gorton led Stetson with 18 points while forward Alexis McMillan added 14 and guards Van Morris and Kevin Craig each netted 11.

The Buffs will carry the momentum of a 2-0 start into their first road test of the season as they travel to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on New Mexico State at 7:05 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27.
