Colorado 86, Detroit Mercy 43

November 23, 2002 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry
GENERAL-
"I thought that we played very tough today. Both teams came out and wanted to win. Detroit played with tremendous intensity. It seemed as if the altitude didn't affect them at all. Their strategy of all the pressure bothered us in the first half, but we settled down after that. We ran well and played hard and with confidence."

ON SABRINA SCOTT-"She showed great leadership today. She stepped up big when we needed her."

ON DEFENSE-"The help defense is here. We have been improving throughout these last two games. It was tough today because we had four perimeter players out there. We moved out (Sabrina) Scott where as in the past games she was playing down low in the post."

ON TURNOVERS-"They forced us into some turnovers in the first half with all their pressure on defense but if you look at it, it's still November and early in the season and we won by 43."

ON THE POLLS-"Every week we see teams in the rankings getting beat by teams that are outside the rankings. These past two games should help us, but we still have to prove ourselves. I would help to see ourselves creep up in the rankings by December."

ON THE TEAM'S PROGRESS-"I think we are still relying too much on Linda Lappe, Tera Bjorklund and Sabrina Scott. I'd like to see more players step-up tonight like Di (Spencer) did as well as Maria (Billingsley) did."

Colorado Players
F SABRINA SCOTT
ON FG PERCENTAGE
-"I was getting good looks. You've got to get in there and knock down the shot when you are open. I just took advantage of the open shots.

ON HAVING THE BALL-"I can create shots. I like having the ball in my hands. I can make opportunities happen.

G MARIA BILLINGSLEY
ON DEFENSIVE PRESSURE
-"That's what my strength is. When I come on the court, I give it my all. I come in with that energy every time, both in practice and in the games. I will always come in with that energy when I get a chance to be on the floor.

ON EXPERIENCE WITH TEAM-"This is new to me, D-I. I have experience with European leagues, but not much here. I am a little older, which can help the team. They also help me.

Detroit Mercy Head Coach Anne Rexford
GENERAL-
"I thought that Colorado had a nice post game, No. 50 (Tera Bjorklund) was a real good player. Sabrina Scott did a nice job at the four-spot she could do it from the inside or the outside. They have a lot of good players. I thought that No. 2 (Amber Metoyer) was an excellent athlete."

"I was a little disappointed in our decision making. We had 35 turnovers and a lot of those were unforced errors. I thought that Michelle Bortz, or senior center, had a good game. She didn't score a lot, but I thought that if a few more of those lay-ups went in, we would be in a little better shape."

"Lis Krzyke was all over the floor and played really well. She had some turnovers when she came in, but then she settled down."

ON COLORADO TAKING CONTROL-"I think we came back and had it within 10 at 25-15 but then they went to the line and pulled back away. If we hadn't done that it could have been worse at half."

ON HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS-"I told them that it was a new half and that they needed to play hard and have a good showing and leave it all out on the court. Of the 10 players, seven did leave it out there."
