Spikers Fall to Jayhawks in Four
November 29, 2002 | Volleyball
LAWRENCE, Kan. - The University of Colorado volleyball team (15-15, 9-11 Big 12) fell to Kansas (19-10, 10-10 Big 12) 30-22, 17-30, 22-30, 33-35 Saturday night at the Horejsi Family Athletic Center to finish their 2002 regularly scheduled season with a road loss as the Buffs cling to the hopes of receiving a NCAA post-season bid.
"That was a very disappointing loss for us tonight," Colorado head coach Pi'i Aiu said. "Both teams came out and played hard. Now we just have to wait and see if our season will continue or not."
Senior middle blocker Meghan Barkman and junior middle blocker Monique Gerlach powered the Buffalo offense with 13 kills apiece. Freshman outside hitter Nicole Carr tallied 10 digs for Colorado, while Barkman finished the match with six blocks and freshman right side Maragda Santillana ended the night with four.
Sophomore setter/defensive specialist Allison Barnes played games two through four as Colorado's libero, and passed excellently in her first match at the position.
KU had five individuals hit in double-figure kill numbers as Molly Scavuzzo (18), Ashley Mighaels (15), Josiane Lima (12), Lindsey Morris (12), and Sarah Rome (10) led the Jayhawk offense.
Colorado had 12 team blocks with a .259 hitting percentage on the night, while Kansas racked up 14 blocks as a team with a .286 hitting percentage. The Buffs came out of the gates strong, swinging .355 to the Jayhawks' .061 mark in game one, but lost momentum in game two when they hit a meager .0258 to KU's .350.
The Buffs will now wait for the NCAA to announce the teams selected to extend their 2002 seasons. Colorado has received 11 consecutive NCAA post-season tournament bids as they have made 13 straight post-season appearances. The NCAA Tournament selection show will air Sunday night at 7 p.m.
