Spikers Take No. 9 Ohio State To Five

August 30, 2002 | Volleyball

HONOLULU - The No. 21 University of Colorado volleyball team dropped their second loss of the season to the No. 9 Ohio State Buckeyes 30-32, 21-30, 30-26, 30-21, 11-15 Saturday afternoon in their second match of the 15th Annual Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic at the University of Hawaii in Honolulu. The Buffs now stand at 0-2 on the season as the Buckeyes start off 2002 at 2-0.

"I think our team played really, really well today," Colorado head coach Pi'i Aiu said. "For us to drop the first two games and come back and take it to five showed a lot of character on our part. We definitely showed a lot of improvement from last night's match. I think if we can learn from our mistakes and get better each time we play we're going to have a pretty good volleyball team this year."

CU had two individuals finish the match with double-doubles as senior left side Kim Taskey recorded 15 kills and a career high, match-high 17 digs against Ohio State while junior middle Monique Gerlach grabbed 12 kills and 11 digs as she hit a team-high .360 on the afternoon.

Freshmen left side Drew Hays and outside hitter Nicole Carr both recorded their first career double-digit marks as Hays tallied 11 kills and Carr pocketed 10 digs in the match. Junior libero Monica Vesanovic played the role as she finished with 12 digs against the Buckeyes.

The Buffaloes hit .214 to the Buckeyes' .213 hitting percentage. Colorado finished the match with 13 team blocks overall as middle blockers Meghan Barkman and Gerlach combined to tally seven in the match.

The Buffaloes will now prepare to face the No. 5 Hawaii Rainbows (1-0) to conclude tournament action on Sunday before returning home to Boulder, where they will have a two-day layover before venturing to the Loyola Marymount University Classic September 6-7 in Los Angeles, Calif. CU will open the regular season at home against Colorado State University on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events/Conference Center in Boulder.
