W-GOLF IN FIFTH AT LADY AZTEC INVITE
October 20, 2003 | Women's Golf
SAN DIEGO - The University of Colorado women's golf team rebounded from a disappointing finish in their own CU/Heather Farr Memorial two weeks ago to shoot a 303-305 in the first two rounds of the Lady Aztec Invitational and sit in fifth after carding a 608 on the Auld Course here Monday.
"We did have a really good start," said Anne Kelly at the conclusion of the almost 10 ? hour day. "Even counting an 80 in the first round and an 85 in the second, we're doing okay. If we could just get those fourth scores down, we could really do something tomorrow."
Â
Host San Diego State separated themselves early from the field, carding a 5-over 293 in the first round and a 3-over 291 on the second. The Aztec's 36-hole 584 is 11 strokes ahead of Colorado State (595), who is being followed closely by Nevada (598), BYU (600) and Colorado (608).
Â
With just eight strokes separating the top-20 individual players, San Diego State's Jenna Wilson (70-74-144) and Northern Arizona's Lauren Gray (69-75-144) have a share of the individual race, but are just one stroke ahead of a pack of four players, including CU's Maria Persson Gulda, who each have a 145.
Â
CU's low score two weeks ago, Gulda is assuming the same role here, as she turned in a 1-over-par 73-72-145, her best start to a 54-hole tournament this season and sits in second, just one stroke off the lead.
Â
In shooting her lowest two rounds of the 2002-03 season, junior Joey Stetser's 75-77-152 was good enough to share19th with Nevada's Erin LaPlaunt. Junior co-captain Allison Rella, who turned in a first round 86, her highest score of the season, shaved 15 strokes from her second round for a career low 71 and her combined 157 rounded out CU's scoring efforts.
Â
Freshman Gina Rodriguez's first to second round scores were as inconsistent as Rella's, turning in a 3-over-par 75 on the first loop before finding trouble on the closing holes of the second, forcing her to turn in an 86, a direct result of having two out of bounds balls on two of the last three holes and having to count a 9 on the last.
Classmate Hannah Hoch is still struggling to find the game that she controlled in CU's first two tournaments of the season, and shot an 80-85-165 for a share of 75th place.
Â
"It's really an adjustment that freshmen have to make. They need to get used to the 36-hole days."
Â
The third, and final round, of the Invitational will be decided Tuesday.
