GOLFERS IN SECOND AT THE NELSON

October 24, 2003 | Men's Golf

STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Colorado men's golf team recorded its best single round score in five years as the Buffaloes stood in second place, one shot out of the lead, after the first round of Stanford's "The Nelson" was completed here Friday.

The Buffs shot a 5-under par 279 as a team, tied with Kansas and No. 17 Washington; No. 26 Duke holds the lead after 18 holes with a 278 total.  The conditions were perfect for scoring, clear skies with no wind throughout the day.

CU sophomores Edward McGlasson and Kenny Coakley are paving the way for the Buffaloes, as the pair posted CU's first rounds in the 60s in three tournaments this fall.  McGlasson shot a 4-under 67, his collegiate career best, while Coakley posted a 2-under 69, which included a blistering 32 on the front nine.

Seniors Jeff Hanson and Kane Webber also danced around par on the 6,76-yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Course, as Hanson shot an even-par 72 and Webber a 1-over 72.  And sophomore Derek O'Neill was right there with a 73.

The last time CU cracked the 280 barrier on a par-71 course was a 276 (-8) second round in the 1998 Missouri Bluffs Intercollegiate.  The Buffs last posted a five-under par round on a par-72 course at the 2000 Prestige.

"Jeff's (Hanson) performance helped us tremendously, CU head coach Mark Simpson said.  "He's been stuck in the high 70s, so that's very encouraging for him to play like he knows he can.  Edward's game is really starting to come around, and he played solid from start to finish today, and it's apparent that Kenny is going to be a solid player for us.

"Kane probably struggled the most; he knows how to score, and he put up a hard 72 instead of an easy one," Simpson added.  "He got the most out of it he could get, which is a good sign.  With an ?easy' 72, you know you left dive or six strokes on the table.  He's worked out a couple of kinks in his game, so we'll see what he can do the last two rounds here.  As a team, we just want to keep doing what we've been doing and do the things to be in position to win going into the last day."

The second round is set for Saturday with the final round slated for Sunday.
