Women's Tennis' Vanderdys Named CU Athlete of the Week

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- Sophomore Jessica Vanderdys won five consecutive matches en route to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Consolation Central Region Final defeating Anna Dybicz of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-4, on Sunday.

Vanderdys, who lost her opening round match in the Round of 64 earlier in the week to the number one seed, stormed back in the consolation round with five straight wins to claim the final win at the University of Utah.  The Centreville, Va. native recorded a 14-7 mark last spring for the Buffaloes with an impressive 12-3 mark at the No. 5 singles postion.

Others nominated for this week's award were Katie Griffin (soccer), Maria Persson Gulda (women's golf), Edward McGlasson (men's golf), Maragda Santillana (volleyball) and Clyde Surrell (football).

Katie Griffin netter her school record ninth goal of the season when she scored CU's only goal in a 1-0 win over Texas Friday in Austin.Griffin's game winner was just the fourth and final shot of the game. The win was CU's first ever against the Longhorns, and as the weekend unfolded they went on to clinch CU's first ever Big 12 title in the sport.

WOMEN'S GOLF: Maria Persson Gulda, Sophomore, Halmstad, Sweden
Maria Persson Gulda was Colorado's low score for a second straight tournament when she carded a 73-72-74-219 to finish a career best fifth at the Lady Aztec Invitational in San Diego.  Her opening day 72-73-145 was her best start to a 54-hole tournament, as she sat just one stroke off the lead, in second, entering Tuesday's final round.

MEN'S GOLF: Edward McGlasson, Sophomore, Orange, Calif.
Sophomore Edward McGlasson carded a 67-72-70-209 to tie for 10th individually, as he was one of four Buffs to break par Sunday at The Nelson.  McGlasson led CU to a third place finish and to a school record two sub-280 rounds in the same tournament.  It was both the top tournament finish and best 54-hole score of his collegiate career.  

VOLLEYBALL: Maragda Santillana, Sophomore, Barcelona, Spain.
Sophomore Maragda Santillana had a career-high 24 kills to lead CU to a 3-2 win over Kansas at Coors on Friday.

FOOTBALL: Clyde Surrell, Senior, Aurora, Colo.
In CU's 34-20 loss to No. 1 ranked Oklahoma, Clyde Surrell might have had the best day of any Buffalo defender all year.  In 43 snaps from scrimmage, he posted six tackles (five solo), including a quarterback sack, one other tackle for loss, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and a third down stop.
