SOCCER WINS 5-1 AT TEXAS TECH

October 03, 2003 | Soccer

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 15th-ranked University of Colorado soccer team won their ninth straight and fifth consecutive against Texas Tech when Fran Munnelly scored twice and received additional scores from Katie Griffin, Maddy Minnis and Jen Thais who each scored for a school record five goals and convincing 5-1 win at the Betty Lou Mays Soccer Stadium here Friday night.  The four-goal margin is the largest since a 4-0 blanking of UMass during the 1998 season.

With the win, Colorado improves to 9-1 overall and remains unbeaten (3-0) in Big 12 play while Buff keeper Jessica Keller improves her unbeaten streak to eight games.  Texas Tech falls to 2-6-1/1-2.  The win was also CU's fourth away from Boulder, another program best.

"You can tell that they're happy and feeling pretty good about how they played," said head coach Bill Hempen.

Texas Tech was on the offensive to start the game, getting the first two shots of the contest off  in the 10th and 12th minutes against Keller before CU rang off four unanswered shots on Tech keeper Megan Knauss.  The Red Raiders would capitalize on their fourth shot of the game in the 23rd minute when forward Jennifer Vasquez netted her first goal of the season off of teammate Catie Arsenault's rebounded shot.

Colorado answered in the 32nd minute when a Kathryn Grandinetti cross served Munnelly for her first of two back-to-back scores.  Munnelly's second was in the 42nd minute and gave the Buffs the 2-1 advantage at halftime.  At the break the Buffs held the slim margin in shots (9-6) and saves (5-3).

Just over a minute into the second half, Katie Griffin netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season to punctuate CU's lead.

"We gave up a bad goal early, when they had control, had a chance, and scored," explained Hempen.  "It wasn't a lopsided game, but once it got to 3-1, it deflated them and the next two came pretty quickly.  We were able to play everyone but (goalkeeper) Nikki Resnick, so it was good that some kids got to rest."

Griffin would later pick up her first assist of the season when she dished the ball off to Maddy Minnis who beat Knauss who had fallen, for the score in the 65th minute.  Thais sealed the win with a one-timer from Munnelly just 80 seconds later.

The two scores and five points were Munnelly were a career best for the sophomore who hasn't been relied on to get the Buffs on the board as much her sophomore season as her freshman campaign due to the balance of CU's increased offense.

"Maddy played very well tonight," complimented Hempen.  "The standards (Fran and Laura Munnelly, Thais, Griffin, Grandinetti, Mihalcin) played their normal games and our defense played pretty solid tonight."

The final box indicated that while CU led Tech in shots (14-10), both teams had eight shots on goal, forcing Keller to make seven saves and Knauss three.

The Buffs' first conference road trip of the season continues Sunday when they play at Baylor (6-5/1-2 Big 12), who upset No. 14 Nebraska 2-1 in Waco tonight.  Baylor has dominated the all time series 4-1-2 and haven't lost at home to CU since the '98 season, and last year settled for a tie.  Colorado's last win against the Bears was in '97.

"We felt going into the season that everyone has a chance to beat anyone on any given night.  Oklahoma's win over Texas, Tech's win over Kansas and Baylor's win over Nebraska is good for the league.  The quality of our league is very high."
