BOULDER ? Freshman Emily Waner had 17 points ? including five 3-pointers ? and Tera Bjorklund added 16 points as No. 20 Colorado defeated Old Dominion 84-67 Friday night in the WBCA Classic.
Reserve Waner was 5-for-9 on 3-pointers in her college debut. Kate Fagan converted four 3-pointers and scored 13 points. Colorado was 12-for-25 from beyond arc in its opener.
“I thought we shot the ball pretty well tonight,” Colorado head coach Ceal Barry said. “Our outside shooting was great. They left the outside corner open so we got our threes in from there.”
Shareese Grant had 16 points and Monique Coker 15 as Old Dominion played its first game. The Monarchs were never closer than 51-45 in the second half after Coker hit a short jumper with 16:47 left.
Colorado responded with a 14-4 run, with both Waner and Whitney Law providing 3-pointers, to lead 65-49. Old Dominion, which had 17 of its 29 turnovers in the second half, fell behind 80-53 after Waner's final 3-pointer and a basket by sophomore forward Amber Metoyer.
Bjorklund scored the final four points of the first half for Colorado, and the Buffaloes led 45-35 at the break.
Colorado plays No. 15 Notre Dame in the championship on Saturday. The Irish beat No. 22 Auburn 77-64.
