November 22, 2003 | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Tera Bjorklund scored 33 points and No. 16 Colorado rallied from a 15-point first-half deficit to beat Harvard 85-81 in the opening round of the Subway Classic on Saturday.
Bjorklund shot 12-for-14 from the field and 9-for-9 from the line for the Buffaloes (3-0), who trailed 37-22 with less than eight minutes left in the first half. Her 33 points were one off her career high of 34, set last season against North Carolina in the NCAA Tournament.
"We did a lot of things wrong tonight, but they're all correctable," said Bjorklund. "We'll just have to see if we can correct them overnight."
Kate Fagan scored 23 points and Amber Metoyer had a game-high nine rebounds for Colorado. Fagan hit seven three pointers, tying a Colorado school record for threes in a game, while Metoyer's nine rebounds were a new career high for the sophomore.
Reka Cserny had 26 points and Hana Peljto added 22 for the Crimson (0-1), who led 48-43 at the break.
Bjorklund scored 20 points in the first half to help keep the Buffaloes in the game, and Fagan scored 14 in the second half as Colorado pulled away. The Buffs tied the game 58-58 with 11:31 to play, and extended their lead to nine points on a Bjorklund free throw with 7:41 in the game.
The Crimson would not go away quietly, notting the game for the second time at 78-78. A Cserny free throw put HU up 79-78, before two more Bjorklund charity shots gave CU the lead at 81-79. Two Beverly Moore free throws knotted the game at 81, but a clutch jumper by Minnesota native Randie Wirt gave CU a two point lead, 83-81. Two free throws by freshman Emily Waner clinched the win, 85-81.
Colorado will face No. 13 Minnesota, a 93-41 winner over Southern University, in Sunday's title game.
"It's fun to be able to play in Minnesota," said Bjorklund, a native of St. Peter, just an hour southwest of Minneapolis. "I have a lot of friends and family here and it's good to be back home. I'm excited to play Minnesota. I've played with some of the girls...in high school and in AAU. They're a good team, and it will be a good test for us on the road."
