November 23, 2003 | Women's Basketball
MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 16 University of Colorado basketball team had a tough outing at the University of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, falling to the No. 13 Gophers 95-61.
Colorado (3-1) got off to a rough start, shooting just 33.3% from the floor in the first half, while Minnesota (2-0) was on fire, going a blistering 17-29 from the floor for 58.6% in the first half. The Buffs had a better second half, shooting 59.3% from the floor on 16-27 shooting, including 4-7 from beyond the arc, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 43-16 halftime deficit.
Kate Fagan led the Buffaloes with 14 points, while Tera Bjorklund chipped in 12. Both were named to the Subway Classic All-Tournament team. CU was without the services of head coach Ceal Barry, who was stricken with the flu the morning of the game. Assistant coach LaTonya Watson filled in for her on the bench. Barry was making her first attempt at her 400th victory at Colorado, and will have to wait until this Friday, Nov. 28 when CU plays Idaho State for another chance.
Lindsey Whalen led Minnesota with 24 points, while Janel McCarville had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Gophers, and Liz Podominick scored 15 points and Shannon Schonrock added 14.
