W-GOLF IN 11th AT KENT YOUEL INVITATIONAL
November 05, 2003 | Women's Golf
Oahu, Hawai'i -The women's golf team got off to its strongest start ever in the Kent Youel (formerly Rainbow Wahine) Invitational here Tuesday when the Buffs carded a first day 312-313-625 and sit in 11th place in the 17 team field at the Kapolei Golf Course.
Maria Persson Gulda continues to enjoy the best start of her young career as the sophomore is CU's low score for the third straight tournament heading into Wednesday's final round. Gulda carded a below strokes per average 76-72-148 and currently has a share of fourth place with Texas A&M's Nicole Melton.
Oklahoma shot two straight sub-300 rounds Tuesday and the Sooners' 297-299-596 is a six-stroke advantage over Washington (301-301-602) which is in second. Just nine strokes separates the top four schools as Texas A&M carded a 301-303-604, and San Jose State, 303-302-605.
Higher than average scores were the norm today on the 5,900-yard Kapolei layout, as Washington's Paige Mackenzie is leading the individual standings with a 72-71-143 while Oklahoma's Lisa Meldrum (71-74) and New Mexico's Lehua Wise (73-73) sit three strokes back at 146.
After rebounding from a disappointing Heather Farr Memorial at the Lady Aztec Invitational two weeks ago, CU finds itself in the rough again, as head coach Anne Kelly had to count three rounds in the 80s towards the team score Tuesday.
Gulda's 36-hole 148 was nine better than teammate Allison Rella who carded a first round 81, but shaved five strokes off her second round score to turn in a 76 for a first day 157 and a share of 40th. Gulda and Rella were the only Buffs that were able to make first to second round improvements as the rest of the team average a five stroke loss.
Hannah Hoch is just a stroke behind Rella, but seven places back on the leaderboard in 47th as the freshman's scorecard read 76-82-158. Robin Worthington's 79-83-162 has her sitting in a five-way tie for 62nd place while Joey Stester's was unable to contribute to the team score with an 84-84-168 and is in 81st place.
The Buffs will wrap up play Wednesday and will close out the fall schedule Nov. 10-12 at the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown.
