Colorado 80, Syracuse 45 Post-game Notes

December 30, 2003 | Women's Basketball

-- UPDATED RECORDS: Colorado 10-1, Syracuse 3-5 (Colorado is ranked No. 13 in both the AP and ESPN/Coaches polls, the later of which was released this afternoon).

-- Colorado is now 7-6 against members of the Big East Conference.

-- This is Colorado's fourth 10-1 or better start through 11 games under coach Ceal Barry; the Buffs opened 11-0 in 1992-93 and had 10-1 starts in 1993-94 and 2002-03 in addition to this year.

-- The 35-point margin was the largest margin of victory on the season for CU, while also the largest loss by Syracuse.

-- In the last two games, CU has held the opponent to a combined 84 points (teamed with a 71-39 win over Wyoming on Sunday);  that ranks as one of the top 2-game defensive performances in the Ceal Barry Era at Colorado.  Tonight's chart:

Dates                              Points      Opponents (Scores)

Feb.  8-12, 1997                   82        @Texas A&M (69-40), OKLAHOMA (61-42)

Dec. 28-30, 2003                  84        WYOMING (71-39), SYRACUSE (80-45)

The above is when holding both teams under 50 points; other instances in the Barry years:

Dec. 28-31, 1991                  80        @Washington (55-58), NEW MEXICO (92-22)

Feb. 13-19, 1992                  81        MISSOURI (75-52), IOWA STATE (79-29)

-- In these last two games, the opponent has shot just 32-of-103 from the field (31%).

-- After Syracuse cut CU's lead to 28-25 with 2:53 remaining in the first half, the Buffs went on a 23-0 run over the next 8:18 to build a 51-25 advantage.  The 23 consecutive points is not a school record; Colorado scored 30 in a row against Iowa State on Feb. 19, 1993.

-- Trailing 66-32, Syracuse had its own streak, scoring 10 in a row as it held CU scoreless for a span of 4:30.

-- Colorado G Emily Waner matched her career-high with 17 points (6-10 FG, 3-5 3PT, 2-2 FT), plus a team and career-high 5 assists.  It's the second time she has led the team in scoring, as she also had 17 in the opener, an 84-67 win over Old Dominion.

-- C Tera Bjorklund had led CU in scoring the last six games, but sat the last 13 minutes of this one after scoring 14 (she played a season-low 27 minutes tonight).  She had 14 points tonight, her 28th straight game in double figures.

-- Colorado is now 48-2 in its last 50 games against unranked teams, dating back to the end of the 2000-01 season.  The losses both came last year?to Villanova in the Coors Classic final and at Missouri.
