Turnovers Plague WBB In Loss

February 02, 2003 | Women's Basketball

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Evan Unrau scored 18 points and had eight rebounds and Stretch James had 14 points and 11 rebounds as Missouri took advantage of a turnover plagued Colorado team, beating the Buffaloes, 71-52, in front of the third largest crowd to watch a women's basketball game at the Hearnes Center.

Tera Bjorklund was the only double figure scorer for Colorado, who shot a season-worst 6-18 from the free throw line for only 33 percent.

Colorado, who is now in sole possession of fourth place in the Big 12, had 20 turnovers-13 in the first half-and were out rebounded 43-36.

"It's ridiculous the amount of turnovers we had," said head coach Ceal Barry. "I don't think we are that superior depth-wise or on the board to give a team that many opportunities."

Things started well for Colorado (15-4, 5-3 Big 12) as they jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead. The Buffaloes were ahead 11-10 with 13:40 remaining in the first half, but Missouri (10-8, 4-3 Big 12) took advantage of Colorado's early mistakes as the Buffaloes continued to throw the ball away as they tried to feed the ball inside to Bjorklund. A jumper by Unrau gave Missouri their first lead and started a 32-13 run over the next 12 minutes. Sabrina Scott hit a 3-pointer to close Colorado's gap to five, 21-16, but 11 straight points by the Tigers, including a lay in and a three from Karensa Barr, moved the Buffaloes back out of reach. Scott's fall away 3-pointer at the buzzer decreased the deficit at the half, 41-23, but it was the third time during conference play that Colorado had been down by 18 or more points at the break.

The woes continued for the Buffaloes after halftime with Missouri coming out and getting six straight points to open the second half and continuing to build an already large lead. Colorado scored eight unanswered points in just under three minutes to make it 61-42, but Unrau hit a turnaround jumper with to put Missouri back up by 21 points.

The Buffaloes will return to Boulder for a Wednesday night matchup with Kansas, a team they beat 71-50 just 15 days ago. Kansas (9-10, 2-6 Big 12) has won two of their last three games. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
