Postgame Quotes
February 04, 2003 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry
GENERAL-"I was really, really pleased with our overall response to our loss against Missouri. I felt like we came out with really good focus and good concentration. First off defensively, I thought we had good help side defense and our communication was a little bit better. Guard play was improved; so overall in the first half I felt we played with really good intensity. Overall I thought we played a complete game. There is nothing like being on your home floor. That definitely does not hurt when you are trying to get back on the win streak."
ON BENCH PLAY-"I think it is real important that our players who practice hard all week long, come in and play. That's why I think it is real important to come out with intensity, so that some other people get to come in other than sitting there so they can come out and play in their uniforms. All the way around it was a good team win for us."
ON UPCOMING TEXAS A&M GAME-"I think Texas A&M away, has always been a challenge for us. We have to be ready when we go down. It's a long trip, it's an early game, and we haven't had much success with one o'clock games on the road. So I think it's kind of a warning sign for us."
ON GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORT DAY AND TITLE IX-"I think that really, girls and women's sports are in their infancy. So I think that it is cause for celebration and a day to recognize that girls ought to have the same opportunities to be competitors and learn the values of athletics that boys have as well. To water down Title IX would be a mistake. I think it is important to have a day to recognize that girls are still appreciated. It used to be a stigma that when I played as a girl that you were a tomboy and that there was something wrong with you, if you liked to compete. For these girls, they are esteemed and are appreciated for their talent. So I think that is the way the attitude ought to be so they are not looking over their shoulder wondering, 'Should I be out here with the guys playing 3-on-3 when they are 12 years old.'"
Colorado Players
Forward Sabrina Scott
ON AGGRESSIVE PLAY-"I think they opened up in a different type of zone. They focused on Tera (Bjorklund) and when we're open (on the outside) we have to take the shots and we have to hit the shots. That got me on a roll. It gives us confidence and it also opens up the middle for Tera (Bjorklund)."
ON TEXAS A&M-"Traditionally they are a quick and athletic team. It's a game on the road and on television and we haven't done so good in those so we really need to get the monkey off our backs. I think we need to practice well the next couple of days and then come out and play well."
ON TITLE IX-"Personally, my Mom says that she never had the chance to play. If I didn't have a chance to play I wouldn't be in Colorado and I wouldn't be playing basketball. I don't know what I would be doing."
Center Tera Bjorklund
GENERAL-"I think it was very important for us to get our confidence back but we still have some things to work on. We had a lot of turnovers and that wasn't good. Another thing we were concerned about was Kansas' offensive rebounds."
ON HER PLAYING TIME-"I just play in there until coach takes me out. I'm just glad to be in there but I was also glad to see Cecily (Jones) get in tonight because she's the one that pushes me everyday in practice."
ON DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TONIGHT AND THE LAST KANSAS GAME-"I thought tonight was similar. Last time they played defense and had me double teamed. Then they had to guard on the outside and that left me open. I think they did good things and improved since the last time we played, but when you play high caliber teams every night you've got to improve."
ON LOOKING AHEAD TO POST SEASON-"We didn't really have a count down before the game (to 20 wins). But we did know that the last eight games were going to be key for use. We've had some losses that were bad on national television so these last games are going to be key."
ON BREAKING OUT OF HER SLUMP-"Personally, it was not a s fun, but now it's more relaxing and more fun for me. When I'm scoring it opens up the outside and everyone is able to work well together."
KANSAS HEAD COACH MARIAN WASHINGTON
GENERAL-"I thought it was a great game for Colorado, not for us, especially in the first half. I knew we were coming into a tigers den after their loss to Missouri. They came out hot and we didn't do what we needed to do especially on their big shooters, Fagan and Scott."
"We were trying to get a little bit better. We are young and we lost Waltz tonight and that hurt us. Every game is going to help us. We need to stay positive and come out tomorrow and get ready for Texas. By the end of the year we will be playing against big teams and we will be playing our best basketball."
ON JUNIOR CENTER TERA BJORKLUND-"I thought she did a good job. To be honest we were more concerned with Fagan and Scott because of their three point threat. I thought all of their key players did a good job tonight."
