April 01, 2003 | Tennis

BOULDER - The Colorado women's tennis team received wins at every singles position besides two of them and cruised to an easy 5-2 triumph over in-state rival Colorado State, Tuesday afternoon at the Kittredge Tennis Courts on the campus of the University of Colorado.

CU broke a two-match losing streak improving to 9-5 and continued its dominance over the Rams with their 24th straight victory. The Buffs also improved its nonconference record to 7-1, including 6-2 at home, while the Rams dropped their third in a row and fell to 4-6.

"We haven't played in 10 days and haven't had much practice," said Colorado head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Today was a great team effort and we played right through the last point."

CU's underclassmen continued to shine as sophomore Kendra Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys took straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 5, respectively adding to the CU advantage. The Buffaloes also claimed the doubles point sweeping all three pro-sets led by Dominique Lemperle and Lia Dimingo at No. 1 (9-7); Strandemo and Morgan Sall took an 8-6 win at No. 2; and at No. 3 Sarah Burrows and Vanderdys won by shutout, 8-0.

With a 3-0 advantage courtesy of the double's teams, Strandemo and Vanderdys, Colorado received additional tallies in the win column by Katherine Anne Lutgert at No. 3 (6-2, 6-1) and Morgan Sall. Sall rallied to win her ninth match in 11 attempts this spring taking a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 decision.

"Morgan may have not played her best tennis, but she won anyway," added Kenneally. "She fought to the very end and wasn't up in the match until 6-5 in the third (set)."

Strandemo's win improved her spring record No. 4 singles to 9-1, while Vanderdys' win was her seventh in eight matches at the No. 5 slot.

Colorado takes the road with a pair of Big 12 Conference matches this weekend with Kansas State and Kansas this Saturday (April 5) and Sunday (April 6). Both matches begin at 11 a.m.
