Practice Spirit Impresses Barnett
April 11, 2003 | Football
BOULDER - The University of Colorado football team held its 10th practice of the spring Friday afternoon, as the Buffs conducted a two-hour session in pads with no tackling.
"There was no tackling today," head coach Gary Barnett announced after the session, "but we had good spirit."
Noting that his squad was eager to play in the annual Spring Game, (April 19, 1 p.m.), Barnett was pleased to see the Buffs persevere and complete a solid practice session.
"In Day 10, you hit a point in time where you don't want to do this anymore," he added. "But (the players) really fought through it today."
Along with a briefing of the day's work, Barnett also updated the status of the numerous position battles that have garnered much attention over the past couple weeks. Mentioning specifically the quarterback and kicker shootouts, Barnett said he has been impressed with the competition his players have displayed thus far.
Among the quarterbacks, Barnett revealed that sophomore Joel Klatt has "clearly jumped out in front" of redshirt freshman James Cox. Even while Cox continues to improve each day and remain in strong contention, Barnett believes Klatt "is showing his maturity, and that is really paying off for him right now."
Barnett also said the kicking battle between junior J.T. Eberly and freshman Kevin Eberhart still remains a standstill.
"Eberly and Eberhart are locked in a dead even race," Barnett commented. "And (sophomore) Justin Zaitz is right behind in second."
The Buffs will resume practice again Saturday evening in front of about 200 high school coaches and conduct a short scrimmage, which will cap off the day's coaching clinic.
