Mink Earns CU Athlete of the Week
April 13, 2003 | General, Tennis
Boulder - Freshman men's tennis player Bucky Mink earns Colorado athlete of the week honors after getting his third and fourth straight wins at No. 4 singles, winning both in straight sets. The two victories helped the Buffaloes defeat No. 63 Louisiana-Lafayette and nearly come up with huge upset at No. 30 Rice this past Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
Mink was one of three Buffaloes to win in straight sets in singles competition against No. 63 Louisiana-Lafayette as he defeated Marc Castellana 6-2, 7-5 at No.4 singles. The win earned the unranked Buffaloes their first upset of the season as they took down the favored Ragin' Cajuns, 4-3.
On Sunday, Mink continued his performance, as the Buffs faced a much tougher team in Rice, and won in straight sets against the Owls' Vuk Rajevac. The 7-6, 6-0 victory gave him his fourth straight victory at No. 4 singles. Mink also won at No. 2 doubles teaming with Maciej Dilaj in defeating Konstantin Haerle and Matthias Mathaes.
The Buffaloes (6-13) will face Oklahoma (14-9) and Oklahoma State (12-3) as they close out the Big 12 Regular season on April 19-20 in Boulder at the Kittredge Tennis Courts.
The others nominated for this week's award were Chase Mullen (men's track and field), Erin Kerr (women's golf), Edward McGlasson (men's golf), and Sara Gorton (women's track and field).
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: Chase Mullen, Junior, Lyons, Colo.
Junior men's track and field athlete Chase Mullen earns a nomination this week after throwing the hammer 196-7 at the University of Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational, just two inches shy of the school record and a regional qualifying mark for the NCAA. He became the first Colorado field events athlete to qualify for the NCAA meet since 1997.
WOMEN'S GOLF: Erin Kerr, Senior, Phoenix, Ariz.
Senior women's golfer Erin Kerr recorded scores of 75-82-71 for a total of 228 to finish 15th at the 17th annual Utah Dixie Classic in St. Georges, Utah. In the last regular season tournament of the year, Kerr fell to 23rd place after the second but shaved 11 strokes in the third round to hand in a 71, the third lowest score of the final round. The Buffaloes finished fourth and placed two finishers in the top-25 for the fourth time this season.
MEN'S GOLF: Edward McGlasson, Freshman, Orange, Calif.
Freshman Edward McGlasson led the Buffs as they finished fourth at the Arizona State Thunderbird/Savane Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. After his first two rounds of 70 and 72 McGlasson was tied for 31st. In the final round he posted a 71-stroke performance and his total of 213 strokes was good enough for a tie for 36th place.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: Sara Gorton, Junior, Phoenix, Ariz.
Junior Sara Gorton torched the track in the 1,500 m to win on the historic Hayward Field at the University of Oregon Pepsi Team Invitational. Her 4:19.77 time was good enough to finish just ahead of teammate Brianna Torres who finished second with a time of 4:28.96. The Buffaloes finished fourth at the invite.
