Tough Buff 'O' Breaks Through
April 09, 2003 | Football
BOULDER - It is no secret that during the spring season, a football team's defense is usually much more dominant than its offense.
And for the University of Colorado football team, the case has been no different over the Buffs' last nine practices -- that is until this Wednesday.
As the Buffs drilled on the fields north of campus for two hours, head coach Gary Barnett finally saw his raw scoring unit come out of its shell and smash through a veteran defense that has controlled much of the spring.
"The offense needed this day as a confidence builder," Barnett stated after the session. "They have had eight days of pounding that rock and not getting anywhere. It was good for them."
Though Barnett did not specifically give any examples of the offense's success during the afternoon, he did say the Buffs conducted several situational scrimmages that the offense usually flourished in.
"I was encouraged to see the other side of the ball make some improvement," Barnett said.
"In their eyes, it was probably a breakthrough," he continued. "But I don't want to put too much on this. We'll see if we can do it two days in a row."
Added sophomore quarterback Joel Klatt: "We did some good things today, but we all know that there is a long way to go. It is always good to see some of your hard work pay off in a strong outing, but this is just one day and we need to keep progressing."
The Buffs will resume practice Friday afternoon, and then hold a clinic Saturday for about 200 statewide high school coaches. The workshop will end with a normal practice during the evening.
