May 28, 2003 | Track and Field
BOULDER - University of Colorado women's track & field athlete Molly Austin was named to the Verizon Academic All-District VII Second Team on Wednesday, adding one more honor to the resume of the senior athlete.
The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve, and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
With her selection in 2003, Austin has been named Academic All-Big 12 in each of her four years at Colorado, maintaining a 3.366 cumulative GPA the demanding School of Journalism.
Austin is coming off a second place finish in the women's 5,000-meter run at the 2003 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, the same event in which she finished fourth earlier this year at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The 2003 season was highlighted by a first place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the Air Force Classic, and a third place finish in the 10,000-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays in California.
Austin was named as a repeat 2001 and 2002 10,000-Meter Run All-American. She hopes to add a third honor at the upcoming NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the same event, June 13-14 in Sacramento. Currently, Austin's 10,000-meter run time of 33:41.03 ranks 12th nationally and second in the Midwest region.
