Carroll Earns NCAA Invite
May 05, 2003 | Men's Golf
BOULDER - For only the fourth time since the NCAA adopted a regional format for the men's golf championships in 1989, the University of Colorado won't be participating, as the seeds for the three regionals were announced Monday and they did not include the Buffaloes.
"My first reaction is that as a team, we will work that much harder to get back to the NCAA Championships, so that next year and in future years we won't have to go through the anxiety that we did these last few days," Simpson added.
The Buffs were young this year, as three members of the regular travel squad by year's end were true freshmen. CU tied for sixth at last week's Big 12 Championships.
CU's lone active senior, Stephen Carroll, was invited to the regional as an individual. He leads the Buffaloes in nine statistical categories, including stroke average (73.85). He has six top 20 finishes and four top 10 finishes on the season.
"Steve is an accomplished player, and I'm pleased that he earned a berth," Simpson said. "He did have a good senior year, he had several top finishes and he's playing well right now. He will need to continue that strong play to advance to the NCAA Finals."
Carroll will play in the NCAA Central Regional, set for May 16-18 in Manhattan, Kan.
The Buffaloes will now close out the season as a team later this week in Ardmore, Okla., taking part in The Maxwell.
"We will use it (The Maxwell) as a building block for next year," Simpson said. "There should be extra incentive for our guys because there will be several teams there that did earn a berth to the NCAA Central Regional. We'd like to beat a few of those to show that we're just as good as many teams that were invited to play."
