SOCCER BEATS NEW MEXICO 1-0

September 14, 2003 | Soccer

ALBUQUERQUE -  Kathryn Grandinetti's first goal in the 16th minute proved to be the game-winner as 16th- ranked Colorado remains unbeaten in its last four contests with a 1-0 win over New Mexico in the first-ever meeting between the two programs at the UNM Soccer Complex here Sunday.

With the win, Colorado comes away from its three game road swing an unscathed 3-0, with wins at then-No. 9 Denver, Wyoming and UNM and improves to 4-1 in the early season while New Mexico remains winless at 0-3-2.

Colorado controlled the pace of the first half, and scored on just its second shot of the game when Grandinetti worked her way through the Lobo defense from outside the penalty area in and her shot in the 16th minute reached the lower left corner of the net past UNM keeper Kristen Winters for Grandinetti's first goal of the season and the 1-0 CU lead.

New Mexico's attempt to answer the CU score occurred in the 23rd minute fell short as short passes between Kristine Sweat, Coco D'Angelo and Rachael Addison were broken up by CU's Alyssa Burgess in the box.

While UNM penetrated its own box several times late in the half, it failed to capitalize on those effort s.  Colorado would go into the halftime intermission with the 1-0 lead, and advantage in corners (3-2) while shots were knotted at three a piece.

Both teams came out of the break on the offensive and combined for nine shots in the first 17 minutes of the second stanza. Their first shot of the half by Katie Griffin in the 48th minute from point blank range at the top of the goal area was snagged by Winters.  New Mexico answered in the 53rd when a Lobo corner resulted in a scramble in front of the CU net and a shot by UNM's Addison was picked up by Keller.  Two minutes later, a 25-yard serve from Jen Thais to Grandinetti in the goal box was broken up by Ashley Lowery and Nicole McCarthy before Winters got her hands on it.  CU's next attempt to take a 2-0 lead went wide left on a Tricia Regan shot and D'Angelo's shot in the 67th minute was sent back into play by Keller before being cleared by Ashlie Mihalcin.

The remainder of the game went back and forth, with UNM keeping the Buffs on their heels the last five minutes, but a scrappy CU defense held off the Lobo attack for its second shutout of the season.

The Buffs return to Boulder Friday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 21 when teams from Denver, San Jose State and Seton Hall will be in town to compete in the second annual Colorado Soccer Challenge at the Pleasant View Soccer Complex.
