SOCCER'S MUNNELLY SCORES ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

SOCCER BLANKS SETON HALL 2-0 FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT

September 19, 2003 | Soccer

BOULDER - With a 2-0 blanking of Seton Hall, the No. 16 University of Colorado soccer team improves on the best start in program history (5-1) and ties the school record for consecutive wins at five, while Denver handed San Jose State a 2-1 loss in the first match in opening day action of the second annual Colorado Women's Soccer Classic here Friday.

'The last two years we were learning to win" period.  Now we think we're going to win every game, and that is a good mentality to have,' said head coach Bill Hempen on the win streak.
Colorado had Seton Hall on its heels from the opening kickoff, and initiated the game's offense, taking the game's first three shots, and scoring on the third.  In the 12th minute, a Katie Griffin pass to Fran Munnelly was deflected off a Pirates defender in the box then gathered by Munnelly who put it behind SHU keeper Buffy Wojciehowski.

The Buffs would continue to dominate the opening stanza, and controlled every aspect of the game.  They would go into the halftime intermission with the advantage in shots (7-1) and corner kicks (4-0) while forcing Wojciehowski to make just one save in the first half.

Seton Hall made a run to tie the game when Jocelyn Dumaresq's shot in the 50th minute met up with CU defender Alyssa Burgess on the right post who headed the ball off the goal line for the team save.  That shot would be the Pirates' first and last of the half.  Five minutes later, the Buffs made it a 2-0 game off the first Munnelly to Munnelly score of the season, when freshman defender Laura Munnelly placed a free kick from the top of the center circle to Fran Munnelly on the left side of the box whose cross met sophomore defender Ashlie Mihalcinon the right post for Mihalcin's first score of the season in the 55th minute.

Junior co-captain Jen Thais had a game high five shots, three of those coming in CU's next five attempts at the net.   In the midst of Thais' rain of shots, Mihalcin went down with an injured right knee following a defensive tackle at midfield and did not return to the game.

Senior transfer Orly Ripmaster matched Thais shot for shot for the share of game high shots (5) and was on the verge of celebrating her first goal as a Buff when her shot from the left post in the 81st minute grazed the goal line, but was cleared by a Seton Hall defender.

Colorado had three more offensive opportunities off shots by Munnelly and Griffin and a corner kick, but was unable to capitalize on those chances in the closing minutes of the game.

In the most statistically lopsided game of the season for CU, the Buffs came away with 19 shots to Seton Hall's 2, took 8 corners to their 1 and forced Wojciehowski to make five saves while CU keeper Jessica Keller came away with her fifth career win and third shutout.

'As a team, we're trying to play the best that we can and keep it going,' said Munnelly.

In the Classic's first match, Denver controlled the pitch most of the first half, but it was San Jose who got on the board first when Kara Krale picked up her own rebounded shot and put it in the right side of net behind Denver keeper Cassandra Kaeding in the 11th minute.  The lead lasted just under seven minutes when DU forward and Boulder native Lleane Grimditch beat three Spartan defenders in the penalty area and Denver's first shot of the game went into the low left corner of the net and knotted the game at a goal a piece.  The tie lasted 25minutes before the Pioneers' Laura Mann picked up Jamie Norwood's rebounded shot to put DU ahead 2-1 for what would be the game-winner in the 42nd minute of play.

The second annual Classic continues Sunday when Denver takes on Seton Hall in a 10 a.m. start, followed by Colorado and San Jose State at noon at north Boulder's Pleasant View Soccer Complex.

'Nothing is a guarantee and this program has never been in a situation where other teams are gunning for us.  It's just a matter of being prepared game in and game out.'
