BUFFS BEAT AGGIES FOR 10TH STRAIGHT TIME

January 21, 2004 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER, Colo.  - Tera Bjorklund had 23 points, and No. 14 Colorado beat Texas A&M 70-58 Wednesday night, the Buffs' 10th consecutive victory over the Aggies.

Bjorklund showed no ill-effects from the hyperextended knee she incurred in the Buffs' Sunday victory over Missouri.

“I didn't expect as much physical play as we saw tonight,” Bjorklund said. “We all knew that they were a very athletic team, just not that physical. They have really improved a lot from last year.”

Kate Fagan had 13 points, and Randie Wirt added 10 points and 13 rebounds in her second straight double-double for Colorado (15-2, 4-1 Big 12).

Toccara Williams had 17 points, eight assists and three steals for the Aggies (7-9, 0-5), who have lost five games in a row.

The Buffs trailed for the better part of the first half, but the Aggies failed to net a basket for a 6:50 stretch. Colorado took advantage, and went in front on a layup by Bjorklund with 6:30 remaining in the first.

The Buffs would relinquish the lead a minute later but went ahead for good with five minutes remaining in the half. Colorado led 33-27 at the break.

The Aggies would get within a point early in the second half, but from the 15-minute mark on it was all Buffaloes.

“I thought when we pushed the lead up to 13, we had it in hand,” Fagan said. “We have some really good free-throw shooters on our team and Tera (Bjorklund) is usually able to get some buckets at the end.”

Colorado had a bit of trouble controlling the ball as they committed 20 turnovers ? 10 in each half, but the Aggies and Williams in particular forced the sloppy control ? snatching 13 steals for the team and seven by Williams herself.

“Fortunately, I think our field goal percentage helped us (beat Texas A&M),” head coach Ceal Barry said of the Buffs' season-high 60.4 percent shooting from the field. “It's obvious that their game play was to make us turn the ball over, but the times we did not turn the ball over we were pretty accurate.

The Buffs now hit the road for a pair of Big 12 tilts, facing off first at Iowa State on Jan. 25 and then at Missouri on Jan. 31.
