Colorado vs. Buffalo Notes

January 03, 2004 | Women's Basketball

n      Tonight marked one of those rare instances where one team (Colorado) played its nickname (Buffalo) and we couldn't come up with another, other than last year's CU at Buffalo game.

n      UPDATED RECORDS: Colorado 11-1, Buffalo 1-7 (Colorado is ranked No. 13 in both the AP and ESPN/Coaches polls; two teams within five spots ahead of CU lost games in the past week.)

n      Tonight marked the third time in school history that Colorado has won three straight games by 30 or more points. In addition to this run (71-39 over Wyoming, 80-45 over Syracuse and 98-47 tonight over Buffalo), it also happened in 2001-02 (83-44 over San Diego, 96-44 over Bowling Green and 88-58 over Houston) and in 1980-81 (86-39 over Winnipeg, 83-49 over Utah and 134-33 over Fort Carson).

n      Colorado set a record for 3-pointers made in a game with 16 (the old record was 12); the Buffs also tied a school record 37 (old mark was 28).

n      This is Colorado's fourth 11-1 or better start through 12 games under coach Ceal Barry; the Buffs opened 12-0 in 1992-93 and had 11-1 starts in 1993-94 and 2002-03 in addition to this year.

n      The 51-point margin was the largest margin of victory on the season for CU, and was the biggest since a 96-44 win over Bowling Green on Nov. 23, 2001 (the same day that CU beat Nebraska 62-36 in football " gotta sneak that in!).

n      The 98 points by Colorado are the most by the Buffs since a 98-78 win over Siena in Nashville in the first round of the 2001 NCAA championship.

n      In the last three games, CU has held the opponent to a combined 131 points, holding all three opponents under 50 points. The last time CU held three foes in a row under 50 came at the tail end of the 1994-95 season: 61-45 vs. Kansas in the Big 8 title game, followed by NCAA wins over Holy Cross (83-49) and SW Missouri State (78-34). It's also the fourth fewest points Cu has every allowed in a three-game span (111 and 120 in 1980-81, and those 128 in 1994-95).

n      In these last three games, the opponent has shot just 50-of-154 from the field (32.5 percent).

n      Colorado committed just two turnovers in the second half.

n      Colorado G Kate Fagan scored a career-high 24 points and matched her career best with seven 3-pointers made (7-of-11); she also led CU with six assists, thus accounting for 36 points tonight.

n      C Tera Bjorklund has played just 49 minutes in the last two games, rested and ready for Big 12 play; she still had 16 points tonight on 7-of-8 field goal shooting (now 96-of-147 for the season, 65.4 percent).

n      Colorado G Leslie Howard scored a career-high 11 points.

n      Colorado is now 49-2 in its last 50 games against unranked teams, dating back to the end of the 2000-01 season. The losses both came last year?to Villanova in the Coors Classic final and at Missouri.
