SECOND HALF SURGE PUT BUFFS OVER SOUTH DAKOTA

November 12, 2004 | Women's Basketball

A 20-7 run over eight minutes in second half to sparked Colorado to a 81-69 exhibition victory over South Dakota Friday night at the Coors Events Conference Center.

With 12:12 remaining in the second half, and the Buffaloes down by one, sophomore  Jasmina Ilic hit two free throws to start the run which ended with Colorado holding a 14-point lead with just over four minutes remaining in the game.

“We were pretty down on the defensive end, and I didn't want to lose so we picked it up.  We picked it up on defense as best as we could.  When we played hard defense everything got better, and from our defense our offense got better and more efficient,” Ilic said of the Buffs defensive intensity in the second half.

Colorado's bench scored 53 of the Buffs points including a game high 25 from freshman Jackie McFarland who also grabbed eight rebounds.  Ilic added 20 of the bench and senior Sarah Lini scored the other eight.

McFarland started the second half at center and scored 14 of her points in that period.

“She (McFarland) is the quickest post player on the defensive end and we'll need her at forward and at post.  We'll need her in the center spot in the future,” head coach Ceal Barry said.

The Coyotes were led by the hot shooting of sophomore Jenni Flynn who drained 60 percent from 3-point range and finished the game with 24 points and six rebounds. As a team South Dakota made 15 3-point shots.

(“Flynn) really got us at the end of the first half hitting three 3-pointers with about 1:30 left.  At half time we focused on not giving up so many 3's.  They did a good job of drawing two players to the ball.  We made the adjustment at half time to not help as much in the second half to eliminate the open looks they were getting,” Barry said.

The Buffs hope to shore up their defense in the next week before starting the regular season in Reno, Nev., against Loyola Marymount on Friday, Nov. 19, at the Nugget Classic.
