Colorado Head Coach Gary Barnett
GENERAL ? “After finding a way to win it, and then not win it, and not win it, and win it...we won it. What a great play by (Joel) Klatt and (Ron) Monteilh. It was great character by our team and by
ON GAME WINNING TOUCHDOWN ? “It started off by design, and then that's what happens, so many times. Things break down and then guys have to make a play. Joel scrambled and then Ron kept running his route and Joel found him and Ron did a great job running after the catch. We had two plays like that. We had another one designed that went to (Blake) Mackey, but he wasn't supposed to run around, right, left, then over the middle, but it ended up being a great play by Bernard Jackson and Mackey. We made some plays out there today, especially on offense and that's the difference in the game.
“We had four guys trying to get to field goal range and Ron just ran his route and stuck with it and Joel scrambled and they had to break coverage. It was sort of designed to be there, but when Joel scrambles, everybody has to stick with their routes”
ON SECOND TO LAST PLAY ? “We knew we had a good run called, that they were playing prevent and soft. If we couldn't get the first down, we would just punt the ball. We felt like we had a good play called to get a first down. We had 16 seconds left so we thought we had time for at least two more plays, and we had one time out left. Obviously Lawrence (Vickers) run and our blocking on that play gave our offense reason to go ahead on our next play. No question in my mind that that was a big first down.”
ON TEAM ATTITUDE- “I would say a sense of seriousness. Everybody really took this game seriously. We talked to them all week and we're so young, that we have to talk through a lot of things and these guys really responded to everything we asked of them. It still comes down to one big play like that and you work hard on the plays you draw and the one that goes for a touchdown is one that was drawn in the dirt. But you have to get to that point and it's all the other plays that get you there. I thought our guys did a great job. Our coaches did a good job.”
ON RB BOBBY PURIFY - “Bobby Purify, from my standpoint, he's finally healthy and healthier than he's been. That's the Bobby Purify that we know. Our offensive line, other than that spell in the first quarter where we couldn't protect ourselves, I feel like we were really able to take over the line of scrimmage and move the ball a lot.”
ON CU OFFENSE ? “We got away from it in the second quarter and we talked at halftime and went back to the stuff we'd worked on all week, and playing with a fullback and tight end. We had some things that we felt were wide open in the second quarter, and that's why we were trying to throw the ball. We also had some big opportunities but we had trouble with our protection. Our halftime adjustment was just to get back to what we worked on all week and to make sure we ran our special plays.
ON THIS VICTORY ? “This is right up there for me. I don't remember winning one like this or being a part of a team that won one like this. It ranks right up there with the
ON WINNING THE BIG 12 NORTH ? “We still need some things to happen, so when we go into
General
“Anytime you get points on the board and for Dylan (Meier) to come off the bench it's a real tribute to him and a tribute to all the young guys who are out there with him.
“(Allen) Webb got knocked out and couldn't come back in. Dylan had to be the guy.
“I don't think you can all of the sudden just turn it on and turn it off. Perhaps we were trying to live off of the second half of last week. We played nine games before this week and that is 18 halves and I don't think we have had enough good halves to say that we have arrived. We have been a very inconsistent team throughout the course of the season.
“I don't know that there is a symbol that would represent this group. It's tremendously different and I am not saying that in a negative way. It's different from the chemistry we have experienced over the years. Every year is different, but this year is far different than any other year.”
On 11 Straight Seasons Playing in a Bowl Game Being Snapped
“I think at some point in time you might reflect back and say we broke another string that was really significant. But we have had good practice with that. We have broken a lot of strings this year and none of them have been ones that we wanted to break. I am not sure I can remember what it is all about...not to have to prepare for a bowl game.”
On Conversion Option Before Excessive Celebration Penalty
“I am not sure if I would have gone for two points, but I was seriously considering it.”
On KSU's Offensive Struggles
“It's one of those things where we just couldn't get into a rhythm. We weren't always good on first down and more often than not we were terrible on third downs in the first half. We just couldn't find the right chemistry.”
On Address To His Team After The Game
“I told them we had two directions to go. I have said on more than one occasion this year that after ballgames it would truly be a great test of character and I told them this one was probably the greatest test of the character of our football team. This football team will be remembered more than anything else by how they respond to this loss a week from now. We have a lot of seniors who are going to line up and play their last game. Our seniors have not brought the kind of leadership that we need and it is time for them to step up for their last one and truly take command of the leadership of this team. We can represent
On RB Darren Sproles Not Going to a Bowl Game
“I think it means a lot to a lot of young guys, but Darren has truly been a special young person for this program. I don't think it's a bowl game that he has on his mind, it is just the fact that we lost a very important ball game.”
On QB Dylan Meier
“No, I can't say that he was ready to play.”
On Colorado TB Bobby Purify
“(Purify) is an awfully talented young player. He runs extremely hard and we had trouble getting him down. I think he had 73 yards in the first half and that is just too much yardage. I don't know what he ended up with, but it is far more than we need to give up.
Kansas State Co-Offensive Coordinator/QB's Coach Del Miller
On QB Dylan Meier Directing KSU's Final Drive
“I am going to say this about Dylan Meier, that is the toughest young man that I have ever seen. He has fought through an awful lot. He is a tough, tough son-of-a-gun.”
On KSU's Second to
“We were just trying to move the ball. We had plenty of time at that point. The defense helped out with the interception. They ran that back and we were back in the ball game. We just didn't score enough. This has been a pretty tough and strange season overall.”
WR Ron Monteilh
ON HIS GAME-WINNING TOUCHDOWN:“I saw Joel (Klatt) scrambling out and I just tried to get to the sideline because no one was there. At first I was just looking back thinking that he had already thrown the ball, but he was looking at me so I kept running to get open. When we first got the ball on the drive I was thinking that we didn't have to get too far to let Mason (
GENERAL: “Hopefully we will have three more games left. We want to have a shot at the Big 12 Championship and that is what we will keep working to do.”
QB Joel Klatt
ON GAME WINNING TD PASS: “Ron (Monteilh) does a good job of trying to find the open zone, and he did that three times today. He always is trying to find the open spot so we can complete the pass. When we first got on the field on that last drive I was thinking that if we could just get it up to the 45 we are in good shape to let Mason (
ON BOBBY PURIFY'S FINAL GAME AT FOLSEM FIELD: “He ran tough; it was absolutely vintage Purify. He was hitting the holes with his head down, and when he would get hit he would just keep going. Once he got going he would throw is head back and run hard, just like we've seen him do so many times at Folsom. He did a fantastic job today, and it was good for him to go out like this because he has done more for this program than anyone else since I have been here.”
ON BOBBY PURIFY WINNING THE HEART AWARD: “I don't think that anyone else deserves it more. It is just too bad that they don't have a tattoo award for Matt McChesney.”
ON POTENTIAL POST SEASON PLAY: “We've had a tradition the past three or four years winning games in the Big 12 North, and if things go our way and we play well, hopefully we'll be playing on December 14 in the Big 12 Championship.”
DT Matt McChesney
ON THE FINAL OFFENSIVE PLAY: “I can believe it happened the way it did. That's way we call (Ron Monteilh) ?Big Play Monteilh.' This was a great accomplishment for all of us. We have a chance to get our seventh win and play for a Big 12 Championship. This felt great. I had tears in my eyes and I couldn't breathe. This was great for Ron and a great ending overall at Folsom Field.”
GENERAL: “This team can get better. We want to be chanting our fight song in
ON BOBBY PURIFY: “He is a practice (jersey) blue man. In practice we can't touch him, but he always comes to work on game days. He puts the team first, and he is a great player.”
ON HIS HEALTH: “I've been sick all week; I lost 12 pounds in two days, but I went to practice and stuck it out.”
TB Bobby Purify
ON KNEE INJURY: “I'm all right, I'm just a little sore but everyone is always a little sore after a game. My shoulder is a little more sore than the rest of my body, but I guess I am just getting old.”
ON WINNING BIG 12 NORTH: “We can't control our own destiny, we just have to go out and win against
ON THE CROWD CHANTING HIS NAME: “I really didn't hear it during the game, but I heard it after. You never really expect it, but it was so exciting to hear the crowd chant my name.”
ON MIKE
ON BEING AN ALL AROUND BACK: “Blocking is up there for me. I pride myself on being an all around back, not just a first and second down back. I want to be there on third down, either blocking or going out for a pass.”
ON THE
ON TEAM CONFIDENCE: “We have always had confidence, but we have always been killing ourselves doing the little things wrong. But we have always had the confidence.”
ON THE LAST PLAY: “Honestly I wasn't even watching it, I didn't know what everyone was screaming about. I was getting my legs loose, preparing for over time. Then, I heard everyone screaming and I turned to see (Ron) Monteilh in the end zone and I just dropped to my knees happy.”
S Dominique Brooks
GENERAL: “This feels good because we are bowl eligible now. I didn't want to be sitting at home having people ask me when we were going to play, but we are bowl eligible now.”
ON MONTEILH'S TOUCHDOWN: “I was just thinking please catch it and please score. For (Ron) Monteilh to catch that ball in his last game (at home) and for him to get his first touchdown, as he did, and for Bobby (Purify) to have that kind of game ? it was just great to see them go out like that.”
ON SENIORS WINNING FINAL FOLSOM GAME: “It definitely feels great. We seniors have been through a lot since we have been here and this feels awesome especially since it is against
WR Mike Duren
ON HIS PURIFY TRIP UP: “When his (Bobby Purify's) leg hit me I was just hoping that he wouldn't go down, but I guess we won so it isn't that big of a deal. Bobby just laughed; I told him I would take him out to dinner or something, but that is just how he is.”
ON STARTING: “It is great to get in there on defense, trying to be consistent and making plays.”
ON HIS FIRST QUARTER INTERCEPTION: “We kind of switched up the coverage, and he threw it right to me. I tried to return it down the sidelines but it didn't work out how I wanted it to, but it is still nice to get the interception.”
ON
WR Blake Mackey
ON TRICK PLAY RECEPTION: “Bernard (
QB Alan Webb
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU: “I got dinged up. It wasn't much.” UNCONCIOIUS? “No.”
ON THE WINNING SCORE: “They just made more (plays), they just had pretty good plays than us, and it resulted in them winning. That's the bottom line. Obviously I didn't play well enough to win. CU just played a pretty good game and made big plays and they won.”
ON PLAYING AT FOLSOM FIELD: “It was a real big emotional game because the north division is on the line. It was a dogfight and both teams played hard. CU just made more plays than us. “
LB Ted Sims
ON HIS INTERCEPTION-“ At the time my interception was big, the ball just popped up, and I leaped got my hands on it, and somehow with the blocking found my way into the end zone, but I guess at this point that play just doesn't matter.”
ON THE LAST PLAY-“ we where in prevent defense and we obviously didn't prevent anything. A man slipped through the coverage and broke into a hole in our zone. We all played really hard this game, and there is no way you can pin the loss on anybody, we just couldn't come out with a win. It was good to see everybody going one hundred percent as hard as they can again.”
GENERAL-“This loss was hard, but it is the game of football and it's just any other thing we have to deal with, we'll come out this week and re-group.”
WR Yamon Figurs
GENERAL-“
ON THE LAST PLAY- “There is no one reason the last play developed as it did. We were just out there playing football and the man just happened to beat us into space. There is not much you can say or do that's football.”
DB Jesse Tetuan
ON
GENERAL-“ No body wants to go out this way, I feel terrible cause I was one of those guys that didn't help us win at all. I feel terrible because there were seniors that can't get this chance back.”
ON
WR Jermaine Moreira
GENERAL- “We had a chance in this game. We came in and made some big plays. I'm very disappointed right now. This game just broke our hearts.”
ON THE PLAY OF QB DYLAN MEIER- “Dylan is a tough competitor, and he lead our team down there (the end zone).”
DT Derek Marso
GENERAL- “To tell you the truth this it the worst day of my life, but we're going to come back and keep playing no matter what. We still got another game to go, and we're going to come out firing. We have to win this next one for our seniors.”
ON THE LAST PLAY: “I was playing defensive end. I rushed up field and he came up underneath me. I hit his foot, and it's a play I should have made, and he got away. I looked up and saw them score, and it just killed me.”
WR Antoine Polite
GENERAL: The game hasn't sunk in yet, the difficulty of this loss. It meant so much to the seniors, I guess all I can say is this was a very disappointing loss, there's no other way to describe what this team is feeling right now. It was an emotional roller coaster of a game, we were in it then they would score again, then we would get back in it and then they would score again, this is a hard one.”
ON THE LAST PLAY: “I saw our team go prevent, and I'm not so sure how but I saw a man slide out through the middle. Klatt scrambled and hit the guy that had slipped behind our defense. It's just one of those big plays that happen, a special one for
GENERAL-“\This is how the season has gone, just a roller coaster of ups and downs. This game follows suit with us coming back multiple times only to see it slip between our fingers. It had been like this all season with beating
GENERAL-“ Coach said it was important for the seniors to stick together, for us to be with each other for this final game. He said for us to play this last one for the senior class and to make sure the underclassmen know how important it is to go out on a high note. As disappointing as this was we can still come out and play with the same pride, and character, and get our team started out next year on the right foot.”
