BUFFS TO TANGLE WITH AGGIES WEDNESDAY

ZIMMERMAN DOUBLE DIP PACES BUFFS PAST ISU

November 24, 2004 | Volleyball

BOULDER  ? Austin Zimmerman had a double-double and led a Colorado attack that hit a scorching .405 as the Buffaloes swept Iowa State 30-16, 30-26, 30-16 in a Big 12 Conference match Wednesday night at the Coors Events Conference Center.

Colorado claims its third straight win improving to 14-12 overall and remains in sixth place in the Big 12 at 9-10. Iowa State ended its season Wednesday night at 8-21 overall, 1-19 in league play.

Zimmerman had 11 kills, 12 digs and nearly recorded a triple-double with a career-high eight blocks. The sophomore middle also hit a personal best .647 recording her 11 kills on just 17 attacks with no errors.

Junior right side hitter Allie Griffin had a team-high 17 kills and tied a career high in hitting percentage with a .727 mark (17k-1-22att). The Buffaloes hit .400 or better for the third time this season, and first since hitting .407 against Cal State-Northridge in September. Sophomore outside Amber Nu'u was the third CU player in double digit kills with 12. Nu'u had nine digs as did her twin sister, Ashley Nu'u.

Sophomore Lara Bossow had seven kills and hit .400 (7k-1e-15att) while freshman Amber Sutherland hit a career-high .500 logging five kills on 10 attacks with no errors.

“Tonight we just did the little things,” CU head coach Pi'i Aiu said. “Our offense was better tonight I think because we've been focusing on ball control and that helps us get us some good swings.  We seem to be doing that as of late, unfortunately it might be a little too late to effect much.”

Colorado will end the regular season with a big match at Kansas on Saturday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m. in Lawrence. The Buffs need the win to finish .500 in the league standings and to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. The field of 64 will be announced on Sunday evening.

Tonight's match was the final home outing for Colorado's lone senior, Allison Barnes. The setter from Arlington, Texas, had five digs and one assist and will finish her career as one of only five Buffs with 1,400 assists and 600 digs.

“It was perfect -- perfect game and perfect ending,” Barnes said. “I don't think it will set in until this spring and when I'm back watching the team from the stands.”
