ROBY NAMED CO-BIG 12 ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

DALLAS - University of Colorado freshman Richard Roby was named Phillips 66 Co-Big 12 Rookie of the Week, announced Monday in voting by a panel of media covering the conference for games Dec. 20-26. Roby joins Jeremiah Massey (Kansas State) and Aaron Bruce (Baylor) for this week's honor. Bruce and Roby are the first rookies recognized from their respective schools since 2001-02.

 

Roby averaged 20.5 points as Colorado posted victories over UMKC (79-68) and Radford (74-58). The freshman guard had a career-high 23 points versus UMKC, including a personal-best five 3-pointers. He scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half.

 

In two games, he also totaled 12 rebounds, four steals, six assists and shot 16-of-29 (.552) from the floor. Roby leads the Buffs in scoring with 16.5 points per game. The 6-6 guard from San Bernardino, Calif. (Lawrence Academy {Mass.}) is the first CU freshman since the 1995-96 season to lead the team in scoring (Chauncey Billups).

 

 

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Jeremiah Massey, Kansas State, Sr., F, 6-7, 220, Detroit, Mich./Oxnard Community College

Massey helped the Wildcats to their eighth straight win in a 81-66 victory over Northern Illinois. The senior forward scored a career-high 32 points on 8-of-15 field goal shooting. He was also 16-of-17 from the freethrow line, tying a Bramlage Coliseum record for most connections from the stripe. The scoring total marked the first time since Dec. 15, 2001 (Pervis Pasco, 30 points vs. North Texas) that a K-State player has scored  30 or more in a game. Massey also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals, posting his third outing of 20 points or more this season.

 

Co-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Aaron Bruce, Baylor, Fr., G, 6-3, 190, Horsham, Victoria (Australia)/Horsham College

Bruce scored a team-high 22 points in the Bears' 97-73 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore. The freshman guard shot 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the field, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. He also had a career-high five steals, adding three rebounds and three assists. Bruce has led BU in scoring in six of seven games this season.
