Colorado vs. ISU, Quotes

February 11, 2004 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry

GENERAL: "That was as competitive a game as we have had all year.  Megan Ronhovde and Brittany Wilkins kept them in the game. Ronhovde on the outside and Wilkins on the inside.”

“We were not looking ahead to Texas.  We just had one practice to prepare for this game, I wanted to juggle the lineup a little bit.”

ON DEFENSE: “We played better defense in the second half.  ISU matched us at halftime, and I think we played our most intense defense in the second half.  We were really hustling in the second half, and we got the effort that was missing this past weekend.”

Iowa State Head Coach Bill Fennelly

GENERAL-“ For starters, you are never happy losing a game, but I thought we played with a lot of heart and a lot of energy. You cannot have 29 turnovers though. I thought Colorado got up in our grill and they guarded the “you know what” out of us. I thought we shot well, and we made some good threes, it was a good effort. Colorado is a great team with a lot of options, and I am disappointed, but they (CU) are in the top 10 for a reason. They (CU) have a lot of weapons, but the difference tonight was turnovers.  I was encouraged by our effort because we played against a very good team, and I am very proud of that.  When you are on the road and you are playing a great tem, you just want to have a chance, and I felt we did tonight.  When you are shooting well, you have a chance and I thought that our offense was decent.  The defense was okay, but Colorado has a lot of weapons and we put them on the free throw line a lot.  When you have great free throw shooters like (Kate) Fagan and (Tera) Bjorklund, it is like giving them points, and you can't.  Colorado did really good on rotating and Wirt had some big shots, but no one really did anything major.  Billingsley came in and made a three, but overall Colorado made enough plays on shooting.  We tried to make it harder on (Bjorklund) in the second half, because I felt we were way too easy in the first half.  Guarding her, however, usually ends up leaving somebody else open, but overall the free throws and turnovers are what ended up costing us the game.  When you are on the road playing against a great team everything has to go right, but they have a record for a reason.

ON TERA BJORKLUND?“I love her to death and I am glad I don't have to coach her again.  She really played like a senior and she was very poised.  She just lets the game come to her and she is an outstanding player.  Without a doubt, she is one of the Top 10 players in the country, and probably one of the Top 10 people, as well.”

ON EMILY WANER?“Unfortunately I do have to see her again since she is only a freshman.  I think she is an outstanding player and she is very patient.  She has learned Coach (Ceal) Barry's system really quick and she had great pressure defense.  For her to fit in with a senior dominated team like Colorado, it really says a lot about her character.  She is a great player.”

C Tera Bjorklund

ON C BRITTANY WILKINS: “She hit some outside shots and grabbed some good offensive rebounds. When I went out to help on defense, she got the ball and made some big shots.”

G Kate Fagan

ON PREPARATION FOR ISU: “This was the only time that I can remember we only had one practice before a game. We tried some new things on offense, running new plays, trying to open things for the forwards outside of the triangle. I don't think it's hard when you get beaten by 27 on the road to turn around and get up for the next team. This game, I moved to the forward spot and was triple-teamed a lot of the game, but that was able to open up the court more.”
