Colorado vs. Kansas State quotes

February 07, 2004 | Men's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Ricardo Patton

GENERAL:“I feel very fortunate to win this game. I don't know that I believe the best team today won that game. We talked about it in the locker room, sometimes we make life harder than it has to be. We have to give credit to Kansas State. " We were fortunate, we were blessed.”

“They're a very good basketball team. I don't think their record indicates how good they are. It's a very tough league and I think sometimes you're schedule puts you being the eight ball.”

ON LOSING THE LEAD: “We stopped guarding. We started off not guarding, the we guarded, then we stopped guarding again. When you stop playing defense, you're going to lose a lead. I don't think our team every believed they (Kansas State) were as good as I said they were.”

ON KSU G TIM ELLIS: “We knew their guards were good. I think those guys make Kansas State who they are. " If you have good guards you can play with anybody.”

ON JAYSON OBAZUAYE'S LAST SECOND SHOT: “It went in by the grace of God. We didn't want to call a time out with 10 seconds left on the clock because Kansas State didn't have any timeouts and I didn't want to give them a chance to set up their defense.”

ON THE LAST TWO WINS OVER KSU: “I haven't thought about the fact that was the same team that we made a desperation shot against last spring in Dallas. Andrew Green mentioned that Dave Plati mentioned it, but I wouldn't have thought of it.”

“At least last year, we knew what we were going to do. We had a timeout and set it up and knew where that shot was going to come from. This one, you just hoped the guys could get it to the basket and shoot it.”

ON G BLAIR WILSON'S SECOND-HALF SHOOTING: “If we don't make those shots, we don't win the game. They out shot us at the free throw line, they out-rebounded us. They just outplayed us and like I said, I don't believe the best team won the game. That's what I told our players, we've got to do a good job at being consistently good. " Sometimes we make life harder than it has to be by the decisions we make, by the situations we put ourselves in.”

ON THE PLAY OF THE BENCH: “I thought Glean Eddy did a nice job, came in played hard, played good, played focused. I thought Marcus (Hall) came in and hit some shots. It was OK, didn't like anybody's defense, other than that, folks, I'm glad we won.”

Kansas State Head Coach Jim Wooldridge

ON JASON OBAZUAYE'S WINNING SHOT: “It was a tough shot.  He went in there and made a hard shot.  We had two players contend the shot; they all went in (to stop it).  But, we were not able to get it done.”

ON BLAIR WILSON'S PLAY: “(They were) big plays by a big-time player.  I think we let him get loose once.  All in all, most of his shots were earned and great plays on his part.”

ON HIS TEAM'S PLAY: “I thought they hung in there and still played really well.  We could not get Wilson stopped and we could not get (David) Harrison stopped either.  But, I thought we stood in there.  It's really frustrating.  It's really tough when you are in a game like this.  Your record looks different if you win this, and so does your season.

“We are still fighting through this inexperience.  We have taken some big steps in the last couple weeks.  I think they'll keep coming back.  They have been coming back all year, so we'll get through this (rough stretch).”

ON JEREMIAH MASSEY: “I thought he played a quality game for us.  That's been our deal throughout the year ? you never know where your offense will come from.  The last couple weeks it's been Jeremiah, but we need to get some other guys in there (scoring).”

Colorado Players

C David Harrison

GENERAL: “I think the better team won the game. That's what I think. He's (Coach Patton) trying to prove we're not as good as we think we are.”

ON DEFENSE: “We scored 82 on them and we won, sometimes you have to play defense offensively and we out-scored them and won the game.”

F Michel Morandais

ON HIS LATE TURNOVER AND FOUL: “I should have been stronger with the ball, and that's the way he stole it.”

G Blair Wilson

ON OBAZUAYE'S WINNING BASKET: “He flips up shots like that all the time. We always wonder how it goes in and it always does. Fortunately for us, he missed a free throw so they didn't have any time to set anything up.”

ON SECOND-HALF SHOOTING: “I was a little more aggressive, looking for my shots. I though the offense was a little more stagnant especially when David (Harrison) wasn't in the game. " I wasn't thinking, just shooting the ball. It felt good to shoot some balls on that end.”

ON HIS LAST TWO WIDE-OPEN SHOTS: “I thought I hit five 3s previous to that, but maybe they weren't looking. The last two were wide open, especially the last one, there was no one on my side of the court. I'll take those because they don't come very often.”

G Jayson Obazuaye

ON THE UGLINESS OF HIS LAST-SECOND SHOT: ”Coach gets a little upset when those don't go, but when they do, everyone's happy. I guess today everybody's happy.”

ON WHAT HE WAS PLANNING TO DO: “What I saw was that they were denying Blair on the right side and some of the other guys. Then I saw the guy (on me) kind of sag off a little bit. So I made a decision just to take it to the basket strong.

ON THE LAST TIME HE WON A GAME LIKE THAT: “I would say this was the first game-winning shot in my
career. I made a big basket (in high school) but no game-winning shots.”

ON THE FOLLOW-UP FREE THROW: “I tried to make it, but since it rimmed out, that worked out pretty good.”
