STEVINSON, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team got just what the coaches ordered for weather here Tuesday, but the Buffaloes couldn't take advantage and wound up tying for fourth place in the 6th Annual CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational.
No. 27 Kansas won for the fifth time in six tries in the CU-sponsored event, as the Jayhawks won with a tournament record 858 score, or 6-under par, edging in-state rival and No. 31 Kansas State by three shots. Iowa State grabbed third with an 865 score, while the Buffs and Wichita State tied for fourth with 5-over par 869 totals.
The Buffs, up five spots to No. 38 in the latest GolfStat rankings released Tuesday (and up seven places to No. 34 in Golfweek), defeated three District 5 rivals here, while losing to three and tying one. The results in this meet factor in greatly come seeding time for May's NCAA Championships.
Colorado came into the final round trailing first-day leader KU by 13 strokes, after the 7,191-yard, par-72 Stevinson Ranch Golf Club course layout played its “easiest” in the six years of the meet due to pristine weather conditions. But with temperatures some 20 degrees cooler in the 50s combined with winds that at times gusted up to 25 and 30 miles per hour, the conditions were ripe for Colorado to make a comeback in the kind of weather it has thrived in.
While the Buffs responded with what would be the second lowest round of the day, it didn't shave nearly enough strokes off the lead. And with Wichita State scoring the best, a 2-over 290, the Shockers were able to rally and tie the Buffaloes for fourth.
Iowa State sophomore Tyler Swanson, tied for the lead entering the final round, shot a 1-under 71 to claim medalist honors with a 10-under 206 total, establishing a new tournament record in the process. The previous bests were 8-under 208 totals recorded by CU's Ben Portie in 2002 and Pacific's Matt Hansen last year. Swanson's four-stroke win is second only to Hansen's six-shot victory a year ago.
Sophomore Edward McGlasson led the Buffaloes, as he battled the elements to a 2-over 74, finishing with a 2-under 214 total, his second tournament under par this season. The other occasion, at Stanford's The Nelson last October, was the other time he also led the team this year, having now done it twice in his native California.
“I started off with a few mistakes and battled back, and just really hung in there,” McGlasson said. “I got it up and down a few times, but never really got anything going. I had four birdies and an eagle, but I couldn't find my rhythm and the course always seemed to come back and slap me in the face after all of those. It played really tough, so I just wanted to hang in there for the team.”
“As a whole, we played solid, just didn't play great. We didn't have the one or two individuals get really hot that we needed to win,” said CU head coach Mark Simpson. “The conditions we had today are what we needed to win. Kansas shot 296, and if we shot 282, we win. Like I said yesterday, we needed to shoot our best round of the year to be in position win, and if Kansas shot around 300, we would have had to be four, five, six under, and that's exactly how it played out. In conditions like this, we needed a couple of scores in the 60s, a 70 and 72, and we would have been where we needed to be. But I could see early that it wasn't going to happen.”
Colorado was the only team to place all of its players in the top 30, while Wichita State was the only other to have all finish in the top 40, quite an achievement considering the blustery conditions. But Kansas countered by have three in the top 11, with K-State having a trio in the top 17 and Iowa State two in the top 10, including the impressive performance by Swanson.
Senior captain Kane Webber and sophomore Blake Moore both shot 1-over 217 for 54 holes, tying for 13th overall, as Moore had CU's best round of the day of the five that counted toward the team score, an even-par 72.
CU's other senior captain, Jeff Hanson, played as an individual, as he has been working on some putting technique changes along with nursing a slight wrist injury. His results thus did not count towards CU's overall team score, but he put up a final round 71 to tie for 17th with a 218 total. Two other Buff sophomores, Kenny Coakley and Derek O'Neill, tied for 29th with 222 totals.
“Coming back from this trip is certainly successful, with a win (at last week's Western Intercollegiate) and a fourth place finish, but we certainly have some work to do in the district to get seeded where we want to be for the national championships,” Simpson added. “We have two big tournaments left to prove our worth heading into the NCAA's.”
The Buffaloes resume action in two weeks, traveling to West Lafayette, Ind., to take part in the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational on April 10-11, which is also the site of May's NCAA Central Regional, CU's likely destination if it qualifies for the NCAA Championships.
SECOND DAY NOTES: With temperatures about 20 degrees cooler and winds steadily blowing between 10 and 20 miles per hour, with gusts up to 30, the 75 golfers in the field were hard pressed to match the 39 subpar rounds (and 12 at even par) recorded on Monday; only eight subpar rounds and five par efforts were scored Tuesday" The low round of the day was a 5-under 67 scored by Wichita State's Cameron Bishop, on of just two scores in the 60s" Kansas' winning score of 858 was the lowest in tournament history, besting its mark of 861 in 2002; with Kansas State also under par, it brings the total to just four teams breaking par (864) out of the 90 team scores in the six-year history of the meet" Over half of the field of 75 golfers was comprised of underclassmen, as 20 freshmen and 20 sophomores competed here, along with 15 juniors and 20 seniors.
