SENA TO JOIN CU GOLFERS
May 04, 2004 | Men's Golf
Sena has a confirmed that he will attend CU on an Eisenhower-Evans Scholarship, and is the second recruit in head coach Mark Simpson's class of 2004.
Simpson, native of Durango, has once again mined his native area of the state in landing Sena, who was both the 2002 Class 4A state high school and the 2003 Colorado Golf Association Junior Stroke Play champion. Those are his crowning accomplishments on an impressive resume that includes 10 high school tournament victories, the 2003 regional title, the 2002 Conquistador Golf Club championship (as a 16-year old, including a first round 66) and the 2003 San Juan Junior title.
Sena won the state title as a junior with a 73-67?140 performance at Greeley's Boomerang Golf Club. He finished third in the state meet as a senior, firing a 70-73?143 at Cattails Golf Club in Alamosa, and was 11th as a sophomore in 2001. He was a two-time, first-team all-conference selection and a three-time Cortez junior champion. His high school coach was Randy Jacobson, and his teacher is Micah Rudosky, the head pro at Conquistador and one of the top tutors in the state.
He captured the junior stroke play title last summer in Denver with a 70-71-67?208 scorecard. He was one of 24 boys to be selected as a CGA Junior All-Star.
"We are extremely fortunate Shea has confirmed his intentions to attend CU," Simpson said. "He is a proven winner on and off the golf course and I believe will prove himself to be one of our history's top players."
An honor student with a 3.69 grade point average in high school, he's also been active in his community, as he's been a volunteer teacher giving junior golfers lessons the last three summers.
Southwestern Colorado has long been a pipeline for CU golf, starting with Simpson himself in the late 1960s. Others who have followed to CU include John Arrabito, Ben Fiala, Bobby Kalinowski and Tom Stacy, all of who hailed from Durango.
Sena is the second member of this year's recruiting class; Simpson hopes to add one more player within the next month to complete the group.
