COLORADO RALLIES FROM 0-2, UPSETS NO. 20 SAN DIEGO IN FIVE

September 10, 2004 | Volleyball

BOULDER ?
Junior Allie Griffin had 22 kills, helping Colorado rally from a two-game deficit to upset No. 20 ranked San Diego 25-30, 30-32, 30-28, 30-21, 15-10 in the third match of the Colorado Invitational Friday night at the Coors Events Conference Center.

Colorado's rally from down two games to win is its first since Oct. 31, 2001 when it pulled off the comeback against Baylor in Boulder. The Buffs move to 2-0 in the tournament, 4-2, overall and will face North Carolina on Saturday at 7 p.m. for a chance at the tournament crown. San Diego is 2-2 overall.

Griffin, who also had a career-high tying seven blocks, reached the 20-kill mark in a match for the third time in six tries this season. Junior Maragda Santillana had 16 kills and a team-high nine digs. Sophomore Lara Bossow had a career-high 12 kills on 24 attacks with only one error (.458).

USD cruised in game one, and had to fight off a CU game point in the second frame (30-29) to take its 2-0 lead into the locker room. Despite the loss, the momentum had shifted to CU as their offense shifted into high gear. After hitting just .211 in the first two games (32 kills-14 errors-85 attacks), the Buffs hit a solid .400 the rest of the way (47k-9e-95att). In game five, the Buffs were errorless, recording nine kills on 20 attacks (.450).

Sophomore setter Ashley Nu'u had career-highs with 63 assists and eight kills.

The defense shined for CU as well and was spread fairly evenly. Five Buffs had at least five digs, including eight by Nu'u, Austin Zimmerman and Nicole Carr. Zimmerman also tied a personal best with seven blocks. As a team, CU outblocked USD 14-11.

“It was so good for our team to be involved in a big prolonged match like that against a really good team,” CU head coach Pi'i Aiu said. “This match was a great learning experience for us.”

San Diego was led by Boulder native Devon Forster who had a match-high 25 kills. Kristen Carlson had 18 kills while Kristen Hurst had 14.
