Erling Christiansen Named Athlete of the Week

BOULDER-Â Erling Christiansen earned CU Athlete of the Week honors for the week of January 10, 2005 when he won his first collegiate race, posting a 41:41.2 time in the 15-kilometer freestyle race in the Alaska Invitational that was held at Jackson Hole, Wyoming January 13 and 14.

The junior from Oslo, Norway edged Alaska's Kjetil Dammen by 4.6 seconds to claim the 15-kilometer freestyle race, and to help propel the University of Colorado Ski Team to a third place finish in the Alaska Invitational as only 7.5 points separated second through fourth place.

Others winners of Athlete of the Week this past month were Marcus Hall (Men's Basketball), Veronica Johns-Richardson (Women's Basketball), Joe Klopfenstein (Football), and Chris Copeland (Men's Basketball).

Winner for the week of December 13, 2004:
Men's Basketball: Marcus Hall, Sophomore, Houston, Texas
Hall was instrumental in Colorado's win over Colorado State as the sophomore dropped 22 points in the Buffs 89-83 win against the in-state rival Rams. In 34 minutes of play, he went 8-8 from the charity stripe, and added three rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.

Winner for the week of December 20, 2004
Women's Basketball: Veronica Johns-Richardson, Senior, Fullerton, Calif.
Johns-Richardson had a performance that warranted her position as the senior captain of this year's team when the she had 17 points in Colorado's 76-74 overtime victory over the Washington Huskies. The point guard dished out four assists, including the one to Jackie Macfarland under the basket, who in turn scored as overtime expired to give the Buffs the win. Johns-Richardson also added five rebounds, one block and one steal.

Winner for the week of December 27, 2004
Football: Joe Klopfenstein, Junior, Aurora, Colo.
Klopfenstein proved to be the difference in Colorado's 33-28 victory over Texas-El Paso in the EV1.Net Houston Bowl. The junior had five receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown; his 78-yard TD reception was the longest reception by a tight end in Colorado history (previous long was 57 by Daniel Graham), and the catch and run brought CU to within 28-26 at the time. He caught the ball near midfield and eluded two UTEP defenders and outran a third en route to the end zone.
Winner for the week of January 3, 2005
Men's Basketball: Chris Copeland, Junior, Richmond, Va.
Copeland dropped a career-high 25 points, leading CU past Richmond 75-69. He also added four rebounds and two blocks in 34 minutes of play. The junior's playing time was second only to junior point guard Jayson Obazuaye (35 minutes). Copeland is challenging freshman guard Richard Roby for the team scoring title, and has really stepped up lately.
