Colorado Men Finish First, Women Place Fourth At Pre-Nationals

October 15, 2005 | Cross Country

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. ? Senior Bret Schoolmeester paced the third-ranked University of Colorado's men's cross country team to a first-place finish in the “White” race at the Pre-Nationals here today in Terre Haute, Ind. Senior Christine Bolf took the top honors in the women's “White” race and paced the seventh-ranked Buffs to a fourth-place finish. A total of 34 teams participated in the “White” races today.

Schoolmeester completed the 8k loop in 23 minutes and 44 seconds and took third overall. Billy Nelson also finished in the top-10 for the Buffs and was just nine seconds behind Schoolmeester for sixth overall. Stephen Pifer (24:10) came in at 15th, while James Strang (24:14) took a 19th-place finish. Payton Batliner (24:24) finished at 27th and rounded out Colorado's score.

“The men ran the times I hope they would run,” Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore said. “Faster times seemed to be the general story with other teams running faster. We ran well enough to with the race, but I'm not sure if we are where we need to be at this time.”

The men totaled 70 points and bested second-place Notre Dame by 26 points.

Bolf ran the 6k look in 20 minutes and 13 seconds. Jenny Barringer (20:34) took fifth overall, just 21 seconds off of Bolf's pace. Kalin Toedebusch (21:06) finished 18th and Liza Pasciuto (21:25) and Jackie Zeigle (22:14) came in at 39th and 107th, respectively for the Buffs.

“The women are not where they need to be,” Wetmore explained. “The front four did their jobs, but our big worry is back at our fifth runner. We need someone to emerge from the back.”

The women placed fourth with 170 points. Michigan won the race with 86 points.

The Buffs will be back on this course for the NCAA Championship on Nov. 21 and this race helps CU see what improvements they have to make. “The function of this race gives us a definitive block of information as to what we need to do,” Wetmore said. “We've raced this course in the past and will race it at the end of the season. The women will race the exact same course (the men race a 10k loop at the championship). We have to make some corrections from this race if we want to finish where we want to on Nov. 21.”

The NCAA Championships are on Nov. 21 at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind. The women will race in the 6k; while the men will race the 10k.

The Buffaloes return to Colorado to compete at the Air Force Invitational next Saturday, Oct. 22.
