Golfers Finish 10th At The Prestige

October 18, 2005 | Men's Golf

PALM DESERT, Calif. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't rebound from a disappointing second round and finished 10th here Tuesday in the sixth annual Prestige At PGA West.

Colorado, ranked No. 14 in the latest GolfStat rankings, opened in second place after one round, and turned in the eighth best team score in a logjam for the final round.  But a 20-over effort in the middle round did the Buffaloes in, as CU finished with an 892 team score, some 32 strokes behind champion UCLA, which won its third straight tournament and should improve on its No. 8 national ranking.

The Bruins won by 10 strokes over No. 10 BYU, which shot the best round Tuesday with a 4-under 284 for an 870 total.  UC-Irvine grabbed third (872), No. 45 Illinois fourth (875), with No. 12 Pepperdine and No. 22 Notre Dame tying for fifth (880).

Senior Edward McGlasson opened strong and at one point was 7-under par Monday before play was suspended due to lightning and heavy rains.   He couldn't return to that form after play resumed, eventually firing a 3-over 75 for the middle 18 and a 5-over 77 in the final round to go with his opening 67, CU's best individual round this season.  It all added to a 3-over 219 for the California native and a tie for 17th place.

CU's other senior, Kenny Coakley, recorded a 1-under 71 Tuesday, CU's second best single round of the tournament, as he closed with a 223 total and tied for 32nd along with Buff redshirt freshman Derek Tolan.  Tolan closed with a 73, his low round of this tournament; sophomore Jim Grady tied for 50th (73?227), with true freshman Justin Bardgett getting his feet wet in his first collegiate competition as he was 89th with a 244 total after a final round 81 on the 7,156-yard, par-72 Greg Norman Course at PGA West.

Illinois' Danny Zimmerman and UCI's Tim Cha both recorded final round 70s and tied for medalist honors with 213 scores.

Assistant coach Brad Neher coached the team for the third straight meet this fall, as head coach Mark Simpson continued radiation treatments back in Boulder in a second battle against cancer within the past year.  The procedures have left him to weak to travel, and he hasn't been able to spend much time in the office or with the team the last couple of weeks.   He will have a cat scan next week and also see his oncologist, but he is hopeful that with the last of the radiation treatments in the near future, he can resume his coaching duties this semester.

“Nobody really got it going,” Neher said.  “Derek was under par early, but made a few bogeys and came back to the pack.  Kenny played steady and birdied his 17th hole to get it 1-under, and Jim did the same and shot 1-over.  Edward had four penalty strokes to contend with and hung in there otherwise.  That made it a decent round but not the kind where we could make up a lot of ground on the teams ahead of us.

“I think this will be one of those tournaments where we learned to deal with some adversity,” he added.  “The course was tough, and it received another inch of rain last night, so it was wet, really soaked.  But that should make it play easier, and we didn't take advantage of that.  So we'll get back to Boulder, work on the things we need to and hopefully finish out the fall season with a bang.”

The Buffs will return to action in two weeks, traveling to Baton Rouge, La., to participate in the University Club Intercollegiate.
