Buffaloes Sweep Second Straight Mountain Region Title

November 12, 2005 | Cross Country

PROVO, Utah ?The University of Colorado won its second consecutive NCAA Mountain Region title here today at the East Bay Golf Course at Provo, Utah. Both teams earned automatic bids to the NCAA Championships with the win. Junior Billy Nelson ran the 10k loop in 30 minutes and 28.2 seconds and won the individual crown.

The No. 3 Colorado men recorded 42 points, 37 points more that runner-up University of Texas-El Paso and earned their third consecutive win at the event. Nelson was the first to cross the finish line, and earned his second first-place finish in his career.

Colorado Head Coach Mark Wetmore noted Nelson's training regimen as well as his natural talent as key reasons for his first place finish. He also cited that the slow pace of the race played well into Nelson's hands.

“Billy is a very talented young man,” Wetmore said. “His training is going well. He stumbled at the conference meet but made the necessary adjustments to run a great race.”

Senior Bret Schoolmeester (30:28.7) finished just five-tenths of a second after Nelson and took second overall. Sophomores Stephen Pifer (30:50.2) and James Strang (31:05.0) took seventh and 11th, respectively. Senior Payton Batliner rounded out the Buffs score with a 21st-place finish.

The 10th-ranked women collected 53 points and squeaked past seventh-rated Brigham Young University by six points. The Buffs have won the last two regional events after finishing second to BYU the previous three years.

Sophomore Liza Pasciuto paced CU as she collected her best finish of her career. Pasciuto took second overall and finished the 6k loop in 20 minutes and 52.8 seconds. Senior Christine Bolf, who had not lost a race this season, was seven second behind Pasciuto to finish third.

“Christine got a fall cold and ran a good race for a sick person,” Wetmore said. “Liza was great. She comes on as the season progresses.”

Senior Kalin Toedebusch (21:28.2) came in seventh overall. Freshman Jenny Barringer (21:29.0) finished eighth and senior Jackie Zeigle (22:41.9) rounded CU's score with a 33rd-place finish.

Wetmore feels confident about both his squads heading into the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, Nov. 21 in Terre Haute, Ind. at the LaVern Gibson Cross Country Course. The Buffaloes are the defending national champions as both men and women finished on top of the podium last season.

“My definition of success is outrunning our ranking. We'll be ranked number three or four for the men and probably number nine for the women. We want both teams on the podium and we want to go after the highly-ranked programs.”
