Buffs Beat Sooners 2-0 In Big 12 Soccer

November 02, 2005 | Soccer

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Kathryn Grandinetti and Katie Griffin each scored a goal here Wednesday night to lead the University of Colorado women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Oklahoma in the first round of the 2005 Big 12 Women's Soccer Championship.  Colorado, the second seed, advances to Friday's semifinal match for the second time in school history and the second year in a row.

Colorado dominated play in the early going, first with junior forward Katie Griffin hitting the crossbar just five minutes in.  That was followed by a Fran Munnelly blast high, and another rope from Griffin skipping wide within the first 10 minutes of the match.

Oklahoma had probably their best chance in the early going when sophomore Tenesha Duncan broke free on the left flank.  It was one on one with Duncan and CU frosh Kirstin Radlinski, with the CU keeper answering the call with a diving save to the left to keep the game knotted at 0-0.

Griffin passed to Grandinetti on the left side inside the 18, who fought off an OU defender and slid to hit the ball in with her right foot past an outstretched Jennifer Nichols with 13:01 to play in the first half.  It was Griffin's first assist of the year, and Grandinetti's third goal.

"They played as well as any team I have ever coached," said head coach Bill Hempen.  "The first 15 minutes was an absolute onslaught.  But this game is difficult, and as well as we played in the first half, we only led 1-0.

"Kat's finally finding herself in the right place at the right time.  She was there, she had the chance, and she stuck it in. It's been sticking for the last four games."

At the half, CU led on the scoresheet decisively, outshooting the Sooners 19-4 in the first 45 minutes.  CU keeper Radlinski made just one save, while OU's Nichols made five.  CU outfouled the Sooners 6-1, with two corners to one for CU.

The Sooners dominated the middle third of the second half, until with 13:55 left to play, it was Griffin answering the call.  Taking a pass from the right from classmate Fran Munnelly, Griffin received it in stride after Lindsey Ralph threw up a dummy and let the ball run between her legs.  Griffin fired a blast from just eight yards out, surgically placing it past Nichols, for her first goal of the match, and her team high 10th score of the season.  The assist was Munnelly's sixth of the season, giving her 22 points on the year, one short of the CU single season record.  The shot was CU's first on goal of the second half.

"Every team has a run in them, and we survived theirs," Hempen said.  "Katie is a junior and she's been no better than second team All-Big 12 in her three years.  She's a first teamer in my book.  She's playing her heart out and leaving it all on the field.  Some time she'll get the recognition she deserves."

"I made a run around the right side of the box and got free," said Griffin.  "Fran saw me and I know she likes to play that diagonal ball through, and she did.  Lindsey Ralph threw up the great dummy and I just blasted it.  I'm so happy that we are playing so well.  Every game we get is another game with our amazing seniors and we are playing this way for them."

Grandinetti has stepped up her finishing efforts at the tail end of her final season at CU.  The Centennial, Colo., native got her first goal of the season in a 2-1 loss at Texas A&M, and followed that up with a goal in CU's 5-0 rout of Texas Tech on Oct. 28.  Her three goals this season are one off her career high of four in 2003, and her goal at A&M was her first in 22 games.

The Buffaloes, the No. 2 seed, will play their semifinal match at 5:30 p.m. MST on Friday, Nov. 4 at the Blossom Athletic Complex against the No. 6 seed Texas. Colorado defeated Texas 2-0 in Austin earlier this season.  No. 1 seed Texas A&M will face No. 4 seed Nebraska at 3:30 p.m. MST in a game that will be telecast live in Colorado on Fox Sports Net.
