
Women's Tennis Begins Season 5-1, Defeat OSU

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team won their fourth straight match and are off to their best start since the 1996-97 season defeating Oklahoma State, 4-3, late Monday night at the Harvest House Millennium Hotel.
The Buffaloes (5-1, 1-0) also opened the Big 12 Conference season with a win, the fifth time in head coach Nicole Kenneally's six years at the helm. The four consecutive wins are the most of any Kenneally team since the 2000-01 season when CU won all four of its matches from Feb. 25 ? March 17.
After securing the doubles point and a 1-0 lead, CU quickly won three singles slots in straight sets and clinched the team victory for 4-0 lead. OSU (1-3, 0-1) rebounded well taking three other singles positions to narrow it deficit to the final tally of 4-3.
On the doubles courts the duo of Jenny Hanson and Lynzee Kever won their fourth straight match at No. 3 taking an 8-5 win and at No. 2, Jessica Vanderdys and Veera Nurmi won 8-4 to help the Buffs take the early match lead. In singles, Kendra Strandemo won an easy 6-1, 6-0 match at No. 2 for her 64th career victory; Vanderdys won at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3; and Nurmi won her fifth straight at the No. 4 position, 6-1, 6-1. In reaching her 64th career win, Strandemo improved her conference record to an impressive 28-10 (.737), while Nurmi won her team leading 12th singles match for the 2004-05 season. CU takes their four-match winning streak and victories over a pair of ranked opponents (Washington State, Tulsa) to No. 34 Illinois on Feb. 18 and against No. 62 Western Michigan on Feb. 19. Both matches will be played at Champaign, Ill.
