Stephen Pifer Named CU Athlete of the Week

February 17, 2005 | General, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Sophomore distance runner Stephen Pifer earned CU Athlete of the Week honors after he broke the University of Colorado record for the mile run with a time of 4:02:04 at the Husky Classic Saturday February 12 in Seattle, Washington.

The Edwardsville, Illinois (Highland Park) native set a school and personal record in the mile run with a time of 4:02.04. The time placed him fourth in the field, while setting a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA championship meet. Pifer bested the school record of 4:02.59 that he set in 2004. He also finished sixth in the men's 3000 meter run, clocking an 8:05.90 and narrowly missing the provisional qualifying mark for a second event.

Others nominated for this week's CU athlete of the week award were Christine Bolf (women's track and field), Muriele Huberli (nordic skiing), Lucie Zikova (alpine skiing), Marcos Digliodo (men's tennis), Gleisy Torres Torres (women's tennis), Richard Roby (men's basketball), Whitney Law (women's basketball), Liza Pasciuto (women's cross country), and Edward McGlasson (men's golf).

Women's Track and Field: Christine Bolf, Junior, Los Angeles, Calif.

The junior captured a second-place finish in the 5000-meter run at the University of Washington Husky Classic on Saturday. Her time of 15:56.56 automatically qualified her for the NCAA championship meet. This was Bolf's first race in the 5000 this season and she beat her 2004 season record of 16:17.90 by nearly 21 seconds.

Women's Nordic Skiing: Muriele Huberli, Senior, Scuol, Switzerland

The senior finished third in both the 5K freestyle and 5K classical at the New Mexico Invitational, despite battling the effects of a lingering sickness. Those were her two best finishes this winter and she's posted five straight in the top eight, including three straight top five efforts.  She helped CU to a second-place standing in the invitational.

Women's Alpine Skiing: Lucie Zikova, Freshman, Prague, Czech Republic

The women only had one race, the giant slalom, at the UNM Invitational as bad weather canceled the slalom. Zikova finished second in the GS, just one .01 seconds behind the winner.

Men's Tennis: Marcos Digliodo, Sophomore, Cordoba, Argentina

The sophomore won a pair of singles matches and teamed with Chad Tsuda at No. 1 doubles to win three matches over the weekend helping Colorado (4-2) defeat region opponent Montana State, 6-1 and the Colorado School of Mines, 7-0. Digliodo won his 24th and 25th singles match of his collegiate career by taking a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles over the Bobcats, and capped it off at No. 1 singles against the Orediggers, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, the Cordoba, Argentina native teamed with Tsuda for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles helping the Buffaloes sweep the doubles point against the Colorado School of Mines. Digliodo and Tsuda are the No. 33 nationally ranked team.

Women's Tennis: Gleisy Torres Torres, Freshman, Barquisimeto, Venezuela

The freshman took matters into her own hands once again, winning her No. 6 singles match in the decisive last match of the evening in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 helping the CU women upset No. 54 Tulsa, 4-3. It's the second straight time Torres Torres clinched a match for CU as she performed the same scenario last week in CU's win over No. 68 Washington State. A Venezuelan native, Torres Torres won her fourth spring victory in dual match play, and improved her 2004-05 record to 10 wins. The CU women are 4-1 this season.

Men's Basketball: Richard Roby, Freshman, San Bernardino, Calif.

The freshman netted a pair of double-digit games last week, helping CU achieve a 1-1 record. Roby scored a team-high 22 points with nine rebounds in the 88-79 upset victory over No. 22/23 Texas. Roby was also 6-of-6 from the free throw line with three blocked shots. At No. 3 Kansas, Roby scored a team-best 14 points in the Buffs' 89-60 loss.

Women's Basketball: Whitney Law, Junior, Littleton, Colo.

The junior guard had a pair of career-highs and a second career double-double, in a 58-55 loss to Missouri. Law tied a career high with 14 points and grabbed a personal-best 12 rebounds, leading Colorado in both categories for the evening.  In another losing effort later in the week, this time to Kansas, Law had nine points, four assists, four rebounds and three steals as the Buffaloes fell once again.

Women's Cross Country: Liza Pasciuto, Freshman, Murrieta, Calif.

The freshman became the Buffs' third USA Junior National Cross Country Champion in as many years when she covered the Vancouver National Historic Site 6k course in 21:50.1, a comfortable 13.8 in front of the race runner-up.  With the win, Pasciuto is one of a six-member delegation that will run in next month's IAAF World Cross Country Championships, March 19-20, in Saint Galmier, France.

Men's Golf: Edward McGlasson, Junior, Orange, Calif.

The junior tied for 37th overall as he recorded a 7-under par 209 score for 54 holes in the Taylor Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate in Hilo, Hawaii.  His round by round scores were 67-73-69, with the final round including his first-ever hole-in-one, that was just the eighth ace in tournament play in CU history.  The Buffs finished 16th out of 21 teams in the meet.
