February 19, 2005 | Tennis
URBANA, Ill. ? Jessica Vanderdys won the clinching match at No. 3 singles helping the University of Colorado women's tennis team to a come-from-behind victory to upset No. 48 Western Michigan, 4-3 in a match played at the University of Illinois.
Colorado, ranked No. 59 nationally, improves to 6-2 and winners of five of its last six matches, while Western Michigan falls to 5-2.
Trailing 3-0 with the doubles point loss and two singles positions, CU rallied with wins from Kendra Strandemo, Lynzee Kever, Veera Nurmi and the clinching match from Vanderdys for another 4-3 match win. It was also CU's fourth straight win by the 4-3 margin.
Strandemo started the rally winning her team-best seventh match in eight tries this spring (66th career) with a 6-0, 6-3 winner at No. 2. Kever, the No. 76 nationally ranked player, followed suit with her first victory at No. 1 singles taking a 7-6(1), 6-4 decision.
CU took the lead in the team scoring when Nurmi returned to the winner's circle at No. 4 with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 winner for her sixth win in seven attempts at that slot; and Vanderdys capped off the CU victory rallying from a set down to win in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
“We played great all the way down the line,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “I'm excited for them, proud of them of their performance today.”
CU returns to Big 12 play Feb. 26 at Missouri.
