TURNOVERS DOOM COLORADO AT TEXAS A&M

February 05, 2005 | Women's Basketball

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Colorado committed a season-high 34 turnovers while falling to the Texas A&M Aggies 72-62 Saturday at Reed Arena.

Colorado (8-12, 1-8 Big 12) was led on the offensive end by Whitney Law who scored a career-high 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Veronica Johns-Richardson and Jackie McFarland added 11 for the Buffaloes who have lost five straight for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.

Morenike Atunrase scored a team-high 19 points for Texas A&M (12-8, 3-7 Big 12).  Erica Roy scored 14 and Charlette Castile added 13 for the Aggies.

The story of the day however was A&M's defense.  The Aggies let the Buffs come within five or less multiple times but they never gave up the lead.  Colorado's Kara Richards, battling flu-like symptoms early in the day, was held to just two points but had seven rebounds and played a team-high 34 minutes.

When the Buffs did break down Texas A&M's defense it was usually due to freshman Yari Escalera who tied her career high with eight points.

“Those two guards (Law and Escalera) played really well,” said Colorado Head Coach Ceal Barry, “(Yari) has a point guard mentality, definitely.”

Despite losing by 10 Colorado out-rebounded (41-30) and out-shot (45.8-40.6%) the Aggies.

After being down 10 early in the first half the Buffaloes fought back and were only down 33-30 at halftime.

The Buffs return home after a two game road trip to take on Missouri Wednesday Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. at the Coors Events/Conference Center.
