No. 56 Buffaloes Blank Iowa State

March 12, 2005 | Tennis

BOULDER ? The University of Colorado women's tennis team snapped a three-match losing streak shutting out Iowa State, 7-0, Saturday afternoon in its first match played outdoors at the CU-Boulder South Campus Courts.

CU improves to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the Big 12, while the Cyclones fall to 1-6 and 0-5 in conference play. It was the fifth straight victory for the Buffaloes over the Cyclones since 2002.

“The girls showed up ready to play and proud of them for their toughness in windy conditions,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.  “The team is really coming together well and it was pleasant to be playing outside today.”

The Buffaloes took the early lead sweeping all three doubles points from the Cyclones. Kendra Strandemo and Jessica Vanderdys, who are ranked No. 51 out of 60 doubles teams nationally, won easily at No. 1 singles, 8-0. Jenny Hanson and Lynzee Kever played their first match of the dual season at No. 2, also won 8-4. ISU defaulted at No. 3 with Veeri Nurmi and Martina Sedivec claiming victory.

In singles, CU won all the matches in straight sets.

Strandemo won her ninth match of the spring (68th career) at No. 1 singles; Kever won her fourth match of the spring; and Vanderdys her seventh.

In positions No. 4 through 6, Nurmi also won her seventh; Sedivec reached the winners' circle for the eighth time in 12 outings; and Gleissy Torres Torres took credit for the win at No. 6.

CU takes to the road for its next seven matches beginning with Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, March 20.
