Buff Golfers Finish 15th At Louisiana Classics

March 08, 2005 | Men's Golf

LAFAYETTE, La. ? The University of Colorado men's golf team continued to struggle here Tuesday, as the Buffaloes were in a funk for the second straight day in finishing 15th, or last, in the shortened 20th Annual Louisiana Classics.

SMU overhauled Tulsa to take the team title with a 582 score, as the Mustangs topped the Golden Hurricane by just one stroke.  Though the conditions were pristine, the course was set with traditional tough final day pin placements; only one team, Houston, managed to improve on its score from Monday, moving from last (15th) into a tie for 10th.  Colorado dropped from 14th to finish 15th with a 627 total,

Colorado hadn't finished alone in last in a tournament in over nine years, going back to a 14th place finish at the 1996 PING-Arizona Intercollegiate.  The Buffs tied for 14th?in a 15-team field?two years in this same meet, when three of their current “fab four juniors” were all freshmen.

“We're going the wrong way, no question,” CU head coach Mark Simpson said.  “We had things going in the fall, we were ranked as high as third in the district, but we lost some confidence at The Prestige (the last meet of the fall, where CU finished 13th out of 16 teams).  We need to shake some things up as a coaching staff, so hopefully I can draw on what I hope is my years of expertise to fix what is wrong.

“We're going to be working hard because our next meet is very important for us,” he continued.  “We're in a slump, and in golf, the only way to get out of one is to work harder.”

Junior Edward McGlasson led the Buffs with a 155 total, as he shot a season-high 81 Tuesday on the 7,002-yard, par 72 Oakbourne Country Club course.  He tied for 56th in the meet, which was shortened from 54 to 36 holes due to thunderstorms Monday afternoon.  Juniors Kenny Coakley and Blake Moore were two back of McGlasson with 157 scores, tying for 65th, with Moore's 78 the best single round of the day.

Louisville's Daryl Fathauer captured medalist honors with a 140, or 4-under par, effort; he was the only player to shoot a round in the 60s Tuesday with a 3-under 69.  He won by two strokes over Kansas' Tyler Docking and SMU's Dan Kleckner.

“The good is that we are talented and we can be pretty competitive,” Simpson added.  “We still have the games, we're just not where we need to be mentally.  Some of it is just trying too hard; they're trying to play for themselves and make up for someone else at the same time.  Team golf some times can be a giant puzzle, and we need to get the pieces to fit.”

Colorado returns to action in two weeks (March 21-22) in its CU-Stevinson Ranch Invitational in California, when the Buffaloes host nine teams from its district in what is now the Buffaloes' most important tournament of the year.
