Newlands Powers Way to CU Athlete of Week Honors

BOULDER-- Junior thrower Carly Newlands earned University of Colorado Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday after placing first in the women's shot put with a regional qualifying throw of 47- 1.50 ft at the Colorado Invitational in Boulder this past Saturday.
The Fort Collins, Colo. (Rocky Mountain) native set a new personal record with the throw by about 4 ft, she also took second in the discus with a throw of 137-5 ft. Newlands helped the Buffaloes dominate the competition in their home meet. Although it was a non-scoring meet CU recorded four regional qualifiers, 14 first-place finishes, 10 second-place finishes, and seven third-place finishes in the 38 combined men's and women's events.
Others nominated for this week's award were Allison Rella (women's golf), Edward McGlasson (men's golf), and Jan Zelezny (men's tennis).
Women's Golf: Allison Rella, Senior, Cranbrook, B.C. Canada
The senior closed out the last regular season tournament of her career by shooting par to finish fifth at the BYU Dixie Classic on the Entrada at Snow Canyon Golf Course in St. George, Utah. Rella's finish ties her career best and her final round 72 tied a season low round and was a 10-stroke improvement from her weather-driven first round 82. Her tournament total of 154 is the third lowest 36 hole total of her career.
Men's Golf: Edward McGlasson, Junior, Orange, Calif.
The junior paced the Buffaloes individually for the fifth time in as many meets this spring, and the eighth time in 10 on the year, at the Courtyard By Marriott Intercollegiate. He recorded back-to-back 1-over 73s for a 146 total, tying him for 33rd in the standings, and aiding Colorado to an 11th overall finish.
Men's Tennis: Jan Zelezny, Sophomore, Prague, The Czech Republic
The sophmore went 1-1 for the week at No. 1 singles with one of those victories coming over the No. 36th nationally-ranked player from Texas, Callum Beale. Zelezny rallied from a set down, including a 3-1 deficit in the final set to break a personal six-match losing streak, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Zelezny also won his first match of the dual season over a ranked opponent and claimed his first win of the season at the top singles slot.
